Why do the Jews embrace the Old Testament? Because it justifies killing people. Why do Muslims embrace the Koran? Because it justifies killing people. Christians supposedly embrace the New Testament (which justifies peace) but most of them choose to ignore those teachings. People ask why I don’t believe in religion. Watch the video again and maybe you will figure it out.
Yet many (if not most) Jews are pretty much secular, and the “humanitarian” boats had an interesting mix of characters, notably some secular “activists” (seems like any cause will do) going to throw gasoline on the fire.
I think it was P.J. O’Rourke who visited the disintegrating used-to-be Yugoslavia and wrote, “The Serbian Orthodox are the ones who don’t go to church on Sunday and the Muslims are the ones who don’t go to mosque on Friday.” Somehow, we grab up our discarded religious identities for motivation and ammunition to beat down people we don’t like.
I don’t have an answer to that – your opening line, “I get so sick of this crap,” could be put in Latin as the heraldic shield for many of us today.
So amazing that Jesus walked in just that environment telling people to forgive insults and be merciful to their enemies. His message is so radical that Hannah Arendt (a secular Jew) believed his teaching on forgiveness necessary to any hope of human progress.
But then we would have to desire progress, wouldn’t we…
Yes we would.
I still think one of the greatest acts of forgiveness in my generation was when the Amish forgave the family of the man who went in the Amish schoolhouse and killed those girls. Maybe we should send them on peace keeping missions.
