Here’s a quick logo I knocked out last night for Ben’s Brewing Co. in Yankton. Guess it has something to do with the college there . . . you mean college kids drink beer? Get out!

  1. Yeah, I found the art of the Dancing Aliens in clipart. Weird? And drew in everything else. I guess in Crankton they call the kids that go to Mount Marty (the Lancers) Martians. The best knickname for Catholics I have ever heard was ‘Minnow Munchers’ because they eat fish on Fridays during Lent. Jesus fried in the sun all day, and the catholics eat Mickey D’s $.99 Filet O’ Fish, the sacrifice seems comparable.

  2. In Aberdeen I’d hear tales of the rivalry between Central Eagles vs the Roncalli whatevers. Supposedly there would be attempts at fish tossed out on the bb court by Eagle crowds for the Roncalli crew. I don’t think any of the Roncalli killed an eagle to toss it onto court …… but I do think dead birds did make it on the court too.

In older days, like in my parents’ days, Catholics gave up meat on Fridays year round, not just for Lent. During my growing up Catholic, guilt was dished out a plenty … so if there’s a little joy in a .99 Filet of Fish, what the heck.

    😉

  3. As a Catholic (however fallen) I can honestly say that I despise fish.

Eating it every frikkin’ Friday of Lent will do that to you. My wife loves it, but then again as a Lutheran (see: Diet Catholic – haha) she didn’t get exposed to it like me.

Is the sacrifice comparable? No. But it is a nice gesture.

  4. Well, I was born Catholic, then became Luthern in 6th grade. Being part of both churches was interesting, but not many differences besides the ‘politics’ of the Catholic church. They’ve made up a lot of their own rules, and are truly steeped in hypocrisy.

  5. I’m Lutheran for about 15 years now, I’d still say in some ways from upbringing I’m a bit of a hybrid. One incident when still Catholic was during confession, an old priest told me I “thought too much”. That was pretty much my seeing the red flag a flyin’ — I think lack of using a brain God gave you is more of a sin than eating red meat on a Friday.

I don’t know if there is any organized church that is perfect. Pastor Julie once said something that made some sense though. Religion can be like perscription lens, as in glasses. Whatever seems like the right fit or allows you to focus and feel closer to God is what matters.

  6. Yeah, I’ve heard that “thought too much” schpiel before. I find it has more to do with the person you ask than the church itself.

What always bothered me wasn’t the FAITH, per se, but the CHURCH itself. I believe in what I believe, but I can’t get past the belief that the church is infalliable. Makes my head hurt, given the church’s past.

    Whatever.

Anyhow, back to the subject at hand, I really like this design! Waht software did you use?

  7. I have always like this saying by an Israeli poet I found a few years back:

“God’s may come and go, but prayer is everlasting”

  8. I think the font is called Stockton, it was a new one I got with CS3. I have found the best way to round type in Illustrator;

Type the line on an half-oval textline.

While still editable text mess with the kerning manually

    change the text to paths.

Use the rotate tool to play with it a little more

Then use the skew tool to fatten the ends.

Then to smooth it out I draw an oval and make a cutout using pathfinder.
