So let me get this straight; Property tax payers fund the school district, pay employees and build schools, but we don’t have a right to see the list of names that may have been chosen? They pulled this crap last time with the Rosa Parks school. Then they wonder why they have to pull in lawyers at the School Board meetings to advise them.

“Out of respect for the people who submitted names and because of the names of people who are still living … but not chosen … we are not going to make the list public,” he said.

“I think it has already been destroyed for that reason,” said Ben Schumacher, communications specialist for the district.

How about outta respect of taxpayers? What are we? Chopped Liver?

What’s the big secret anyway? It’s just a list of names. Did someone suggest “The Abortion Hurts Women school” or the “Dr. Homan Horse Farmer school”?

  1. Kelby Elementary

    Becky Nelson Elementary

Sanford and Son Elementary – the first Black Studies elementary in Sioux Falls to go with Spanish school

  2. Martin Luther King Elementary School – hey, we don’t have any black fols in town, so it stands to reason that we do like all the other lily-white cities in the central US and name as many things as possible after black civil rights leaders.

    OR

Thomas Kincade Elementary – going with the artists and ppoets theme. Bonus points because he’s so well known here in Sioux Falls. His paintings adorn office walls and beige split-levels all over town.

  3. The reason they shredded the last list when they named Rosa Parks school was it was chucked full of references to RF Pettigrew and the school district didn’t like that. I betcha 70% of the entries were Pettigrew. I bet Rosa Parks was thought up by one of the school district admins – and you know – they are always right.

Instead they name a dumpy neighborhood after Pettigrew.

  4. He was the second founder of Sioux Falls, basically built the city from nothing with Dr. Phillips. Was our first state senator and a hell of a politician. He wasn’t a deviant, but he was a hardass and an atheist, and the last person you wanted to f’ck with – he liked to settle scores. Not exactly your Rosa Parks or Terry Redlin.

  5. I think it would be fun to call it McGovern Elementary and watch all the conservatives heads explode. Pat Powers would probably pass out.

When Terry Redlin was named Loila Hunking sat on the selection committee and she told me that was one of the leading names being thrown around, but the conservatives on the committee shot it down and said it was too ‘Political’. I think it would be appropriate now, since McGovern works with the hungry and a 1/3 of students in the SF school district get FREE or reduced lunches.
