Why Manny Steele scares the crap out of me
The Gargoyle Leader interviewed District 12 House candidates today.
I think Greg Kniffen knows what he is talking about;
Share your reasons for running for the Legislature. I chose to run for the state House because I felt the issues concerning South Dakota were not being addressed adequately; Too much time during our short legislative session is spent on moral issues that end up dividing our state. We need to work on issues that can really make a difference to our citizens.
But Manny Steele has some ideas all his own;
Share your reasons for running for the Legislature; I want to be an active part of the decision-making process that creates the laws of our state. These decisions affect everyone in South Dakota, including my children and grandchildren. Part of my Christian walk is being a servant to others, and that is my goal.
Hey, Manny! What does your Christianity have to do with being a legislator? As a legislator you are expected to follow the State and U.S. Constitution first. I get so tired of lawmakers injecting their religion into legislating.
Sales Tax Revenue down in Sioux Falls
According to the Sioux Falls City Finance Director in the informational meeting yesterday, Councilor Brown, and the State Economic Advisor the larger cities in South Dakota are seeing a decrease in retail tax revenue and the smaller towns are seeing an increase. They seem to be puzzled why this is. Brown seemed to think it was the rural economy doing well.
I’m gonna guess he is wrong.
I’m not an economist, and trust me, I haven’t really done much research on this after hearing about this development, but I’m gonna guess that it is due to high gas prices and inflation. Used to be small town people would go to the big city on weekends, buy all their groceries, buy clothes and fillup their tanks. I know this because we used to go to Mitchell every Saturday to do the same thing growing up (I lived in rural Ethan). With inflation people are cutting back on buying luxuries in the big cities and buying groceries in their hometowns to save gas.
This may not be good for Sioux Falls, but it is good for smaller towns because it may help to revitalize them.

The Motherload All I wanted for Christmas was to see her stammer around the questions at Thursdays debate, but it’s time for the little maverick to hang up her hat and go back to what God put on earth for, taking care of her babies (and her baby’s babies).
