Here’s the Pekas plan. Sell the fairgrounds and pay the Lyon family the value of the land when they donated it. Take the remainder of the money and build an event center/ fair grounds in partnership with the city. The estimate I hear was the county would net $20-30 million. Thats a good down payment for the city’s $150 plan at Howard Wood.
The day the county and the city agree on a project (especially something this big) is a cold day in Hell. Even if you started negotiations 10 years ago, you might have a facility like that built by 2050.
Not that it isn’t a fantastic idea, it just makes too much sense for the city to accept.
Wow! After the county commission meeting Pekas admitted that they could turn the current fair grounds into an open pit mine!
I have to watch the meeting online yet, who were the two to vote against the loan? Let me guess, Tweety Bird and HiJack?
Hajek made the motion to give them the money, seconded by Barth. Twedt finally went along after strong armed by Hajek.
Kelly said he was in favor but just couldn’t because he didn’t get enough info from the fair board.
Can you watch county commission online?
I guess you can’t, I’ll just DVR it on Thursday on CityLink. So did a bunch of vendors show up and speak? I know the Captain from the Roller Dollz was asked to attend.
The Queen did a great job! It wasn’t organized very well though. Lots of emotions, etc. but nothing that convinced anyone one way or another. I think the 100 plus emails the commissioners received did make a difference.
Yeah, Jayme is pretty passionate about the Derby so I can about imagine how it went. I gave her some ‘personality’ pointers when dealing with ‘some’ of the commissioners. I’ll leave it at that.
Maybe downsize the fair and rebuild the stadium into a bigger dome structure disguised as fair concert or fair horse race show use. Then, the county could staged time lease it to the city as events center and junior football. Original transfer is still the county fair. Likely, title does not restrict short term lease provisions.
I have always felt they should just add seating to Canaries stadium and put a removable roof on it. It could be a multiple use facility and solve several problems in one structure. But what do I know, I’m just a smartass.
