I attended this press conference yesterday, and Kermit touched on many points, including reigning in the ‘needs and wants’ of government, de-regulation for remodeling projects, taxes, and 2nd penny spending;

Sioux Falls City Councilor Kermit Staggers vowed that he would not raise property taxes in 2011 if he’s elected mayor next spring.

  1. No new taxes. Not in this economy. He also noted that previous penny here and there did not go to designated purposes. An events center tax now would go straight into the departing king’s Cayman Islands account. Vow to repeal Home-Rule government and my yard will be full of Staggers signs with my toilet full of resulting city citations.

  2. I liked his main underlying theme in his press conference, “Respect for citizens” something that has been gone for a long time in city hall.

  3. Torturing citizens has become a gladiator sport. Never mind constitutional civil procedures. Thumbs down if you’re sick or incapacitated. The narcist in the city attorney’s office is out of control. Without a court order, he has city employees trespassing on private property stealing personal property. I expect there will be a ‘wounded knee’. Given Home-Rule, the king will be solely responsible and must do some serious time in federal prison.

  4. Just think about some of the things that have happened over the past 7 years that are very anti-citizen.

    – large percentage increases in taxes and fees

    – code enforcement fines climbed from $3,000 a year to over $100,000 a year.

    – overspending on city projects

    – ZERO compensation to people’s basements that flooded from a neglected sewer system.

    Customer service does not exist in city hall.

  5. Businesses have shyed away from Sioux Falls because of the monarchy. It costs to much up front to pay off the top and there’s ongoing protection payments. A constitutional democracy is prefered by business because populations are interested in community development and jobs. The king only seeks to further himself.

  6. Regardless of who is elected, one of their 1st priorities should be to, (I know this is a dirty word) hire a consultant to take a look at city govt. in order to streamline things. The place is being run like it’s 1960. In this case, the consultant would pay for itself by makeing it run more efficiently and getting rid of dead weight.

  7. Agreement for ‘streamline things’. However, when examined, each department will make themselves look very busy. I say lay off 20% of city employees to balance the budget in weak revenue times. Then, furlough/release/retire another 10% whose performance is less expensive with outside private contractors. Finally, a consultant to identify redundancy and further cuts.

  8. HH- We don’t need anymore consultants. The next mayor needs to come in and clean house, then if people need to be replaced, replace them.
