The future is in non-profit news like the Minn-Post, etc.
The for profit folks are too busy comforting their advertisers to afflict the comfortable.

Here’s a comment from Epp’s Middle Border showing the value of a non-profit news and media organization to South Dakota:
“Here is a link to an opinion piece from first-term Republican Rep. Noel Hamiel (Davison/Aurora). First, he is inacurate on SDPB. They DO “share the sacrifice” under the current proposal as they are subject to the same 2% cut as most all other state agencies. Second, his comically acient argument about SDPB “competing” with commercial broadcasters” is flat out incorrect. SDPB creates content for state audiences either underserved or no served at all. Tell me one commerical broadcaster who 1) Sends a team of 8-10 reporters to Pierre each week to broadcast or webcast every minute of every committee hearing and every floor session, along with televising the week=ending press conferences. In fact, these Statehouse resources are OFFERED and CURRENTLY USED by commercial media across the station (newspapers, radio, tv, online/blogs, etc.) Rep. Hamiel…ask the media in your district how many staff they have in Pierre every day of the session to cover state government? When they say zero, ask them how many listen to live/archived audio/video in their newsroom every day; 2) Would broadcast/webcast all the non-sports SDHSAAA championships (All state band, chorus, orchestra, cheer and dance, debate, etc.) y 3) Create academically accredited programming, teacher’s guides and other resources free to SD schools; 4) travel SD each election season to offer free 2-3 minute videocasts to EVERY candidate in EVERY house and senate race, and hosts debates with all major statewide races and debates…I can go on and on, but will only add SDPB does it all free of commercial or political interest. I sincerely hope Rep. Hamiel’s amatuerish and oversimplified (if not flat inaccurate) read of the SDPB scenario bleeds over into the many other important issues he is asked to vote on. He is correct these are difficult decisions. However, if he thinks 131 emails is a lot as a legislator, he has some learnin’ to do. Here’s yet another example of journalism that we would like to see from the state’s largest newspaper – but won’t.

The Onion rocks if for no other reason than there are a lot of people who fail to recognize it as satire… and then the humor is multiplied exponentially.
