As I have said a million times; there are no REAL progressives living in our city, and these proposals prove it;

They’d like to see the city ease the 2,000 feet restriction rule. It prohibits a bar or restaurant that offers video lottery from being built within 2,000 feet of a church, school, park or another video lottery establishment.

First off, if anything, we need to restrict video lottery even more. Having three casinos within one block of my home is ridiculous. Secondly the best way to ‘compete’ with the casino in Lyon County is to give in. Allowing VL casino owners and the state to make more money while Sioux Falls is sitting on a possible sales tax goldmine is a regressive approach. Real progressives see opportunities, not detriments. City leaders (business and city hall) need to get off their asses and extend a hand to Lyon County, and not next week or next month – TODAY! We can piss and moan and fight this all we want, but at the end of the day we can’t stop what Iowa or what Lyon County wants to do. As councilor Rex Rolfing said about the casino, “When you are handed lemons, you make lemonade.” And I see a whole lot of it flowing from Lyon County.

9 Thoughts on “Sioux Falls’ solution to competing with the Lyon County casino? Expand Video Lottery.

    KELO reported yesterday that 16 casino resorts in Iowa led to record crime rates and personal bankruptcys. What about 100’s of state casinos in Sioux Falls? How does Sioux Falls compare?

    Local TV media twist facts more than politicians. They’ve completely ignored city tyranny. At least the Argus is coming around. Public media has a duty to report all news honestly and without bias. When the KELO broadcast license comes up for renewal, there will be a return receipt letter complaint from me to the FCC.

    The whole thing is idiotic.
    First, that people in Larchwood think they’ll become some economic powerhouse by building a casino/resort.
    Second, that business in Sioux Falls will suffer because of it. Really? This thing will create 700 new jobs less than 20 miles from SF. Where are those people going to do most of their shopping and non-gambling entertainment? The only businesses this will hurt are the telephone booth VL casinos that we have way too many of anyway. That’s what teh state gov’t is really afraid of. If they lose SF’s gambling revenue, this state’s gov’t is in the shit big time.
    Way to go Wild Bill for addicting our government to VL revenue!

    And it will prove once and for all that would should have gotten rid of that revenue source a long time ago.

  4. As I said on KRRO this morning, do we wring our hands in Sioux Falls when Brandon gets a new business? This is really no different. Hotels will see more booking, and retail sales will increase from casino employees and visitors.

    maybe the resort’s hotel will get their porn from lodgenet.

    Blackjack, porn and a buffet. What more could we want? Of course who doesn’t love a smokey, telephone booth casino with crappy games, stale popcorn and free (watered down) bud light?

  7. I don’t think this will have much of an impact on the Sioux Falls video lottery business at all. People who frequent those places do so becaue they are addicted and addicts seek convenience and anonymity to feed the habit. They don’t want to drive 20 minutes and be in front of a whole crowd of happy people when they lose their paychecks.

    Vegas wasn’t built on the backs of locals any more than Deadwood was. Besides the payroll revenue Dude alluded to, this place will bring in visitors to the region who will want something else to see or do when they lose whatever amount they budgeted to lose at the Casino.

    When the new Iowa Casino is built, can we use the poker chip denominations for untaxable barter in Sioux Falls?
