The four flights of steep, narrow steps that spiral the inside of the clock tower are free-standing, according to Bill Hoskins, director of Siouxland Heritage Museums. “The stairway isn’t supported by the building,†he said. “Basically, it’s a system where if any specific component fails, the whole thing will fail.â€
