  1. We now have a population of 153888. We had 123975 ten years ago. That’s a 24.1% increase in ten years. Just a couple of quick notes. We have the same amount of firefighters today, and in 2012, as we had in 2005. Emergency calls went from 4650 in 2005 to 5651 in 2010, a 21.5% increase…yet the same amount of firefighters? Part of the reason is cutting back to build our McArena. I can dial up some very similar numbers for the police department. Prolly will when I got time after the holidays to read. One example tho. In 2009 the Animal Control unit was allocated $752,000 in funds. Next year it will be $547,700, a drop of over 28% in 3 years for a population that continues to grow? I just told my dog she better not wander off or she may face a very short shelf life if picked up by animal control. Many, many more departments face the same cutbacks. TRUST ME, more to come.

  2. Not only is the population growing quickly, it is growing sparsely, which means that the square milage of the city has gone up more than 24%. This adds an extra strain to city resources, like fire safety and sewers, that have to serve a geographical region regardless of density.
