He sends the council a bunch of editorials from the Argue Endorser’s editorial board (circa 1995) as a reason the council needs to work less;Â joekirby
One glaring line that stood out to me was that the council should be the legislative body. If anything, I think the council has moved away from that and are finally coming around and realizing they need to be more involved. Here is the agenda for the meeting.
The current council members now make more than 2.2 times more than they made then. Understandable to raise their salaries to attract quality members. But what have we got now? With the exception of Jamison, Anderson and occasionally Brown…this group is nothin’ more than rubber stampers.
They now want to change meeting days and starting times? WHY? So they can cut out a good deal of public participation. We’ve had some good participation lately, and you can see them all looking at their watches once they go past 9 PM.
Given that a part-time job can require anywhere from one to 39 hours per week………….
I do not understand the intent of this suggestion by Joe Kirby to the Charter Revision Commission.
How in the world would you ever be able to monitor this and WHY would you want this written into the equivalent of our City’s constitution!!??
I watched last Friday’s charter revision meeting on SIRE and it was obvious that all members of the commission either did not understand the proposal or did not want to touch it!! When the Chair asked for input on this suggestion there was a VERY protracted period of silence from the members!!
Is this suggestion actually coming from Joe Kirby as one of the original members of the commission OR is it coming from our Mayor who seems to have a CONSUMING desire to limit the power of the Council!!??
I am at Carnegie every week for the meetings….
And, it is quite clear how much time each Council member gives to their part-time job given the quality (or lack of) by their input and the questions that they pose!
I’d love to see a rundown of cr’s analysis of each council member.
I could rate them for you, but I won’t go there.
