2011

Is the Events Center doomed? Probably.

Here we go again down nowhere street. Another study-task-force-monkey-fuck with no results.

I’ll say it for the 1,000th time, until voters approve a funding source, which includes heavy corporate sponsorship, it will go nowhere.

Besides the pissing match between Build it Downtown on the River front Cherapa place people and Huether’s dry dream of putting it at the Arena, there is other conflicting matters;

• There is no corporate sponsor

• There is no clear price

• There is no clear question to the public

• There is no clear demonstrated need

• The economy cannot support it

Councilor Jamison’s vision of building a convention center downtown while converting the current CC into a rec center while remodeling the Arena is the best option. I see this scenario kicking up a lot more corporate sponsorship and it seems to fit better with the current economic situation.

Is the Arena a dump. Well, I wouldn’t go that far, but it does need to be fixed up. My philosophy is simple; when your fridge breaks down in your kitchen, do you remodel the entire kitchen, or buy a new fridge? That is kinda what we are faced with here. The Arena fits our needs, it just needs a ‘spiff up’

From what I have been hearing from multiple sources and camps is the Events Center is dead in the water again, but many great alternatives are emerging.

Many people say I am too negative, but negativity can only be harmful if use it to destroy instead of innovate. I think the latest round of Events Center dance parties will demonstrate that this time we can pull something positive from the ashes that has corporate sponsorship and private non-profit club support.

Taxpayers are not opposed to helping a brother out, they just want a hand in the deal.

Sorry for the absence, but I had ‘family business’ to attend to

I know it is hard to believe that the mean old Detroit Lewis may have family (that he loves) but it’s true. I was outta town over the weekend in Dick Cheney’s home state to attend my cousin Abbie’s wedding (the beautiful bride below with my grandpa – yes, we do have attractive people in our family, of course, besides myself).

While weddings are great and all, a practice both sides of my family seem to want to perfect since they have multiple ones, one part of weddings that I truly enjoy are what the kids say. My cousin Jessie, below (Abbie’s 8 year old sister) did not disappoint. She had one zinger after another. This is her and me at the rehearsal dinner and my sad attempt to photograph the both of us. After the photo I showed it to her on my digital camera, in which she replied, “That’s not very good, we can see the hair in your nose.”

There was a couple of pleasant surprises on the way to the wedding while we drove across America’s armpit called Nebraska. We stopped for lunch in Ericson for a hamburger at this bar. It was the best freaking chargrilled cheeseburger I have even eaten. And BTW, the bartender/waiter/cook needs to stop watching HLN.

The second great surprise was a town called Egbert.

New SF councilor prediction: Dean Karsky gets the nod.

I thought for a long time that Millage was a shoe in, but the more I think about it, I think Karsky may pull this off by the skin of his teeth. He has ran for this position several times before and has the knowledge. I’m not saying he will get all the votes, but don’t be surprised if he gets the 4 votes he needs to win in the first round.

I watched the forum the other night, and wasn’t to impressed by the 3 candidates that spoke, mostly canned answers. And while I lean towards Mark Millage I won’t be to hurt if Karsky gets it. This is only a 12 month appointment, and if whoever is chosen doesn’t do well over that 12 months, they can be booted in the next election.

The city council votes on this tomorrow night (item 39).

South Dakota YouTube Videos

Have you ever searched South Dakota on YouTube? You find some crazy stuff.

Warning, the first video shows the killing of two coyotes. It’s not pleasant.
