Thune-bag wants to make higher taxes for the rich ‘voluntary’ (H/T – Helga)

Hey, Ironic Johnny, can my income, payroll, property, and sales taxes be voluntary also? Oh, that’s right, I am lower middle-class, I don’t pay any of those taxes 🙁

Sen. John Thune (R.-S.D.) introduced the Senate version of a bill that would make it easier for those who voluntarily wanted to pay higher taxes to do so – a tongue-in-cheek jab at President Obama’s proposed “Buffett Rule” that would eliminate tax loopholes for the wealthiest Americans.

Thune introduced “The Buffett Rule Act of 2011” (S.1676), which would require the I.R.S. to provide a line on tax return forms inviting taxpayers to donate to the federal government. Any donations would be placed in a fund dedicated to paying down the national debt. A similar version of the bill was introduced last week in the House.

“If individuals like Warren Buffett or President Obama are inclined to donate their own personal money toward paying down the federal government’s debt, they ought to have that right to do so voluntarily,” said Thune in a statement. “This bill would make it easier for those wealthy individuals who feel they are currently under-taxed to pay more to the U.S. Treasury above and beyond their current obligations, without raising taxes on America’s job creators.”

Talk about Prairie Values! I’m glad to see Thuneless is spending so much time drawing up legislation to help out the wealthy.

Sioux Falls ‘seems’ to have a pyromaniac in our midst

While I don’t usually comment on criminal activity in SF that much on my site, this is beginning to concern me;

Two vehicles and a garage were found on fire early Sunday in an area north of downtown that has been plagued by vehicle and garage fires.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded at 2:30 a.m. to a reported vehicle fire near a building at 1200 N. Dakota Ave. Later, a garage fire was extinguished at 1220 N. Main Ave.

An Oct. 8 article in the Argus Leader noted that firefighters had responded to the same neighborhood southeast of Minnesota Avenue and Russell Street at least seven times in six weeks for car or garage fires.

The scary part about a pyromaniac is that they progress from starting small fires to much bigger fires, sometimes resulting in harm or death. They are also known to be younger;

Individual factors that can lead to pyromania mainly deal with personal issues in someones life. This category includes adolescents who have committed crimes in the past. For example, 19% of adolescents suffering from pyromania have been charged with vandalism and 18% are nonviolent sexual offenders. Other causes may include the seeking of attention from authorities or parents and resolving social issues such as bullying or lack of friends (Frey 2001). Another cause may be that the patient is subconsciously seeking revenge for something that has occurred in the past (Oliver).

Usually I would let the SF Fire Department and SF police department solve this all on their lonesomes, but we should all keep an eye out for this perp, it is only going to get worse until they are caught. I also think the FD and PD need to do a better job of informing the public about what someone like this is capable of AND the warning signs if they think they are living with someone like this.

The Argue Endorser’s head peon writes a love letter to our mayor

Mr. Beck never disappoints with his love letters. One day he is photoshopping former Mayor Munson’s face on Dr. Suess’s Cat in the Hat, the next he is preparing a bed of roses for our current mayor, Mike Huether. (I skipped over all the BS about people parking boats on the street and the he said, she said stuff);

Civic gadfly I.L. Wiedermann, who sued to shut down the red-light cameras at 10th and Minnesota, thereby restoring motorists’ God-given right to veer into pedestrians’ path without getting caught or fined, has filed an ethics complaint against the city and Huether.

First off, I don’t think any citizen thinks it is their RIGHT to run a red light and hurt or kill someone. However, we do have the right to be lawfully served as individuals if we are accused of breaking the law. And that was the point of the lawsuit, and he prevailed, so it is time to STFU about the red light camera issue. The US Constitution is right, and you are wrong. Next topic please.

Their self-righteous cries to the contrary, this brouhaha is all about a simmering personal animosity toward Huether that is as deep as any I’ve seen in my decade in South Dakota – with the possible exception of that guy who used to be governor, and I don’t mean Mike Rounds.

You couldn’t be more wrong on this. I guess I don’t really think about Huether personally, never have. He would never be my friend, and I am sure he thinks the same about me. I also think a lot of SF residents think about him in the same way I do – he has made some good choices, and he has made some bad choices. Nothing personal. It is pretty obvious he has made some bad choices on the EC. Does that mean we should hate him? Hell no. He has been on top of trying to fix other problems in our city and I commend him 100%.

I think Beck is trying to stir the pot by turning the EC issue into a personal thing, and Mike has played that card to. Give me a F’ng break! Politicians make stupid decisions sometimes, that’s part of the bizzo. But to spite or hate them for it is just ignorant. What is even more ignorant is to accuse your readers of doing that.

Then you sit around with your finger up your ass wondering why subscriptions and advertising is down. Gee, I wonder why?

Innuendo and Rumor

I will say this for the 100th time. While I am against a new Events Center, it is simply because I don’t think we need one. We can go into parking, financials, location and trade shows all we want, but let’s face it, the need is not there. If it was, every airline, restaurant and hotel franchise in the country would be lining up to expand in Sioux Falls. They are not.

The mayor wants to blame innuendo and rumor for why this thing may fail. He may be right. But who is spreading these rumors? YOU ARE! Transparency is the key to public trust. It is as simple as including three zeros on an amortization schedule. People are confused about the Events Center plan because the city refuses to present the ‘whole story’ and they read about corrections on various blogs and media outlets.

Is Mike’s EC plan perfect? Fuck no. Nothing that involves government is, but don’t sugar coat it. Tell it like it is. At the end of the day if voters approve it based on the real facts, then you have accomplished something. If you have to rely on subprime credit card marketing procedures, then you should expect false results.

I am not the only one who is worried about the election results. While I hope that the voters reject this silly plan, there is also a part of me that hopes this passes, so we don’t have another 12 months of this bullshit.

I’m also not naive. If this fails, heads will roll. Not just in city government, but in the private sector. I have always been confident that the 1st Amendment will prevail, and so far it has never disappointed me. Trust me, I have struggled with taking a position lately on the Events Center. Friends of mine have been threatened and I have been warned personally of the consequences.

“Any intelligent fool can make things bigger and more complex… It takes a touch of genius – and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction.” – Albert Einstein

I received a donation yesterday to South DaCola. And I have much gratitude for this contribution. I don’t do this for money, or fame, or to meet hottie reporters from KDLT (Even though that is a bonus!) I do this because I have watched the powerful my whole life trample the dreams and ideas of Joe Sixpack, and I just can’t simply stand by and allow it.

Vote NO to the Events Center, and maybe we can let truth and accountability prevail before the next vote.
