Republicans are idiots?

I’ll admit that as a past Nation magazine subscriber, the magazine tends to lean a bit left, well, a lot left. But I have always felt it was very informative, as this latest letter writer points out;

While absently scanning the June 20 edition of the Nation magazine, I came across a headline, “The problem of Republican idiots.” I thought this could be an interesting read. It was. To quote and paraphrase the article, it stated that half the people who identify themselves as Republican are complete idiots. It further stated that the majority in the party show a “combination of willful ignorance and stubborn stupidity.

Following the reading of the article, I came to the conclusion if you vote GOP in the 2012 election, you too can be labeled a complete idiot. Sorry, that’s a label I don’t wish to have attached to my name.

Willful ignorance?! Get outta here!

The rich and influential in Sux Falls just can’t stand it when the little guy tries to mess with their archaic plans

Joe P. Kirby is up in arms, and for good reason, the city council wants to tinker with the Home Rule charter that he cooked up in the 90’s, a form of government that has benefitted Joe and his wealthy buddy contractors over the years because of it’s lack of checks and balances and oversight;

On Monday, the City Council will vote whether to expand its duties to include review of city contracts. I fear that this level of involvement by the council is a step in the wrong direction. Our current form of government is fundamentally sound and will continue to work well, if we don’t change it into something it was not intended to be.

In 1993, I was part of a group that wanted a more efficient form of city government in Sioux Falls to replace the City Commission form, which had become largely dysfunctional.

And it is functioning so well right now?! The SD Supreme Court has ruled against the city on several occasions, and there is more to come on the unconstitutionality of some of the home rule charter practices. Is this the definition of a functioning government, one that is being challenged in court on a regular basis? The main reason the Home Rule charter was cooked up by uber-wealthy Joe Kirby is so that he and his rich buddies would have more centralized control of city government. Sounds ludicrous? Think about it? It’s easier to lobby just one person instead of nine when you need to slip in a project under the radar. Why else would he blatantly lie about the approval process;

No one thought that the City Council would be involved in such mundane operational details as the approval of contracts. Such time-consuming involvement would expand the time required to be a city councilor and make the position not viable for many citizens.

Joe fails to mention a few SMALL details. 1) the contracts would be listed in the consent agenda and approved all at once just like the malt beverage licenses and unless there was a controversial contract that had to be pulled out – this time-consuming task would take about 5 minutes at each meeting. 2) Joe also fails to mention that St. Paul and Omaha have a similiar form of city government, and in those cities the city council approves most of the contracts.

Just admit it Joe, the normal citizen will be more informed about which of your buddies are getting contracts, for what and how much, during a public forum, and more then just one person in our city government will be deciding who gets those contracts. Not sure if this will pass or not after all the shananigans that took place with the termination of Debra Owen. BUT . . .

This is a good thing for Joe-Six Pack but not for Joe-Greenbacks.

The Ugly Table #54

I’ll let an idiot letter to the editor author take care of this one;

By Joyce J. and Ray M. Hofer, Freeman

I am writing about Honorous L. Yusoff’s letter dated Sept. 21.

I, too, tip at a restaurant but not very willingly. We own a business and have employees, and no one has ever tipped. We have to pay our help.

If a restaurant can’t make tons of money, there is something wrong when I pay for my food and part of their wages.

Plus, what really makes me angry is when I’m punished for bringing a group of more than six people to their restaurant and they automatically add a 15 percent to 20 percent gratuity.

Shouldn’t I be able to tip the percent I feel is ample for a large group?

The comments under the article are awesome & stupid;

Let me get this straight: Your job is to take an order and bring it out to the customer when it’s ready, and you want more money than what your boss pays you to do this? Is this capitalism or socialism?

These people are freaking clueless about dining out in a full service restaurant. I would love to make 20% tips by only doing this, but I know I have to go the extra mile to get a good tip, that’s kind of the point of tipping, jackass. Come eat where I work and request me, and I’ll give you ‘take your order’ kind of service. I can guarantee after I take your order and drop off your drinks you won’t see me until check time. We have an infamous family that comes in and never tips. NEVER! When any of us get them, that is exactly how they are treated. They even complained once that we never refilled their drinks, asked how they where, or brought them more bread. Hey, McFly, ever wonder why? T.I.P.S. (TO INSURE PROMPT SERVICE). No TIP. Do the math.

And this guy is a real rocket scientist;

The waitress pulled a fist full of cash bills that could choke a horse out of her apron to put the 15% tip I left for the buffet. This was early in the evening dinner hour, so I am assuming she brought in even more in the next few hours.

You wanna know why she had a fist full of money? Because servers are responsible for their own banks. Not only was that her tips, but I can guarantee most of it was payment for meals she had to give to the restaurant at the end of the night. That is why I try to avoid making change at the table, because dumb fucks like this think that is your tips. And besides, what if it was all of her tips? Are you jealous she has to wait on poor slobs like you all day and gets to take home a living wage? It reminds me of the clever folks who pay part of the bill with a giftcard and only tip a percentage of the amount that is left. Do you think you are fooling us? If your bill is $50 and you normally tip 15% your tip would be $7.50 not $3.75 after a $25 gift card.

Can you make good money waiting tables? Yes, but you have to bust your ass, and you have to put up with the Joyce and Ray Hofer’s of the world who think people should just wait on them because they are so fucking cool to own a business in Freeman. I would love to see what they pay their workers. Take my advice, stay in Freeman to eat, we don’t want you polluting our restaurants in SF with your anti-tip, Oprah watching nonsense.

I would also suggest that every server in SF write down their name in their server books and if they ever come across these people with a check or CC to make their exiting experience one to remember. Servers in Sioux Falls may not have an union, but we talk, and we have your number.

Kylie Huether; The Daily Show is not a credible news source (H/T – TCC)

Yeah, because like, MSNBC, CNN and FOX news are;

“Teens are Wired”
By Kylie Huether
Teenagers have a reputation of being lazy and careless when it comes to staying up to date in the world of politics. Of course there will always be the exceptions like myself who choose to pride themselves on being well informed US citizen and choose to be active members in the local politics. This select few will become the leaders of tomorrow, but ignorant followers who are emerging due to new technological advancements will destroy democracy as we know it. The current generation of teenagers spend ungodly amounts of time in front television sets and computer screens. Plus, nobody can forget the iPod, BlackBerry, MP3 and camera cell phone crazes which have captivated the lives of many America’s. Teens can only be described as wired, a scary fact. Every teenager is wired to an electronic device which could hold endless opportunities for advancements. Unfortunately, their uses are not in the areas of educating the public on foreign policies, current events or basically anything worth while. Entertainment is the main focus and in some instances the public may become dumber by wasting their time on these machines.
Instead of receiving information from highly acclaimed news sources, teenagers are choosing to watch MTV and the Daily Show. This is a problem. Teens do not comprehend the dramatic impact politics plays in their lives. The attitude towards politics in the eyes of many teens is “who cares.” They wonder why they should waste time watching politicians attack opponents with negative campaigning. When time could be better utilized watching reality television programs where everything is make-believe and does not affect people’s personal life. The easy alternative is not always the most worth while.
When a teenager is looking for information to write a research paper the first word that pops into their mind is Google. They see Google as a quick, easy, accessible choice. When there are thousands of reliable sources to click on teens go and believe everything Google has to offer. Do not get me wrong Google has saved my grades on numerous sleepless nights, but this technology teaches students to forget about old school source like the public library, old newspapers, and radio broadcasts. Students need to strive to receive creditable information.
New technology has created the unnecessary need for speed. Multi-billion dollar companies are competing to create the next obsession. My fear is that America is moving to fast and loosing quality in the race.

Funny she would bring up public libraries. She should ask her father what he thinks of funding them.
