Scrapyards: bad. Electrical substations: Good?

So let me get this straight? We can’t build a scrapyard in the former stockyards location, but a gigantic substation is okay? (agenda item)

Have I been living under a gigantic rock, or is this just finally coming to surface? Something doesn’t smell right about this deal, and I’m not talking about the smell coming from JM’s.

I have a small substation (about 50 x 50 feet) adjacent to my backyard. Let me tell you about the constant hissing, buzzing and snapping. I guess I don’t hear it anymore, because I have learned to tune it out, but friends often comment on it. “How can you stand the sound?” It is probably the reason there is a new renter every couple of months in the house next to it 🙂 The worst is when there is a freezing rain, it is like fireworks going off. Imagine this on a larger scale? How would they think a scrapyard would be anymore intrusive then a 15 acre substation? I guess the energy companies really do run the town.

Position Statement on Sales Tax Initiative

Bread for the World-South Dakota • September 13, 2011

Bread for the World-South Dakota neither supports nor opposes the South Dakota ballot initiative to raise the sales tax.  We realize that it raises funds and specifies them for important causes.  However, it also raises the sales tax rate on a number of life’s basic necessities.

We believe that both supporters and opponents can agree that sales tax on groceries should not be raised–regardless of whether the initiative passes and the tax goes up on other things. Even without adding additional tax on food, the initiative would still raise over $160 million for schools and Medicaid – a significant sum.

The ballot initiative, as written, allows a way to keep the increase from being applied to food, because it applies the additional 1% sales tax only to items that are taxed at the 4% state rate. Thus, if the 2012 legislature would take any amount off food, even 1/2%, the food tax would not go up if the petition passes.

In this case, the food tax (state and local sales taxes combined), which currently costs families annually enough to buy 3 weeks worth of food, would not go up to 3-and-a-half weeks. It would keep the tax on a basic can of powdered baby formula below $1.

Even a one-half-percent reduction would be an acknowledgement of the current economic struggle.

This position neither supports nor opposes the initiative.  However, it is our hope that both supporters and opponents of the initiative will agree that keeping the tax on food as low as possible would be helpful for children, families, seniors and nursing homes, for good health, and for the economy.

MY THOTS: Taxing food more to fund healthcare and education seems a bit assbackwards considering good nutrition helps students learn better and contributes to a longer life. But solving problems by going to root seems to easy. Nevermind.

Big Cheese. Delicious, but spendy (for North Cliff)

Before I began this review, I will give full disclosure. I helped come up with the name of Big Cheese, and helped with some other concept ideas and actually designed the original logo (which is not being used – can’t win them all, I guess).

Anyway, I got a coupon in the mail the other day for delivery, so I thought I would give them a shot. Shortly after they first opened, I went into the place and got a gyro sandwich, and it was really good, but I’m not into the whole trendy sports bar thingy, so I couldn’t see myself hanging out there, that and it is in a very strange location (Cliff and Benson). I will give them credit, nothing like that exists out there, and ever since the Sidewinder closed, I don’t venture that way very often.

I chose the Magic Mushrooms for an app ($9.99)

Fresh mushroom caps stuffed with our signature handmade sausage, cream cheese, and a touch of fresh herbs topped with melted parmesan.

I have had stuffed mushrooms before, and have always liked them, but these had a great twist, they were mostly stuffed with spicy sausage, and damn tasty. But you gotta eat them hot. They were still hot when I got them, but starting to cool quickly. Best if ate in the restaurant.

My pizza was the best part of my delivery though. Pork Belly Passion (17.99)

99 Chunks of tender braised pork belly, red onions, sliced Canadian bacon smothered in BBQ sauce and our signature freshly grated mozzarella cheese

Sorry, but the description is not correct. There was maybe 12 large chunks of pork belly. Not sure where this ’99’ number came from? But the flavor was rich and smokey. I have always been a fan of BBQ sauce on pizza and pork toppings.

Big Cheese is damn tasty, but a little spendy for my taste. My bill was $30 before my $4 coupon. That is a gob of moolah for a pizza and an app. I guess if you are into sports bars and paying too much for a pizza pie, Big Cheese is for you. If you are a cheap ass . . . well you have your options.
