While education trust funds gain millions last year, SD Repugs continue to peddle the lie

High School dropout? No problem, you are still qualified to make croutons.

While this is good news;

The South Dakota Retirement System ended its latest financial year with $1.6 billion more than it had a year ago, the result of robust investment earnings. That will allow a larger increase in pension payments next summer, officials said Monday.

I applaud the state for prudent investing, but the real story here is in the last sentence of this article;

Clark told lawmakers that trust funds supporting education and health care programs also grew by more than 20 percent last year.

So the trust funds grew that much, but we had to cut education by 6%? It just doesn’t add up. Investment funds are for rainy day situations, governor, it’s time to stop beating education to a pulp. Education is an investment into the future. But maybe DooGard has revealed his true intentions, dumb people work cheap;

“We’re out there just trying to promote South Dakota and the business environment we have, the positive business environment — tax structure, low regulation, high productivity workforce — it’s something we’re not afraid to tell people,” (Pat Costello) he said.

That’s because South Dakotans know they must work twice as hard (physically) to get anywhere in life due to the lack of good education programs.

Call me crazy, but I have often felt Republicans in this state have starved education for years to stay in control and to keep our workforce dumbed down. You have to pay smart people more money.

Now shut up and go make some croutons!

Vern ‘The Velvet Hammer’ Brown settles it; We have plenty of money for snowgates!

No surprises here;

City officials are asking the Sioux Falls City Council for about $3 million more next year for snow removal and to accommodate higher fuel prices because money allotted for snow removal and street maintenance this year is running out.

And according to Vern, that is no big deal;

If the street department goes over budget, Brown said the money probably would come from the city’s reserves. “We’ve got healthy reserves to take care of those kinds of issues,” he said.

Thank You Vern for settling the debate. We have plenty of money not only to plow our streets, but to plow them properly by using snowgates. So the next time I hear you piss and moan about the expense of snow gates, I will just pull up this quote.

Misleading Signage

The old 7-Eleven on 18th & Minnesota that has had several failed businesses at that location has just flipped again. Probably hard to see from my shitty cell-phone picture, but they have flowers, grass and butterflies painted in the window.

“Yeah, I would like to take a look at that super-soaker you have behind the case, please.”

Instead of handing out FREE or reduced lunches, maybe we should hand out FREE birth control?

And the Obama administration has done just that;

Pro-lifers are horrified at the announcement Monday that the Obama administration has approved a recommendation from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to guarantee full health insurance coverage for birth control, including the so-called “morning-after” pill, under the Affordable Care Act.

Okay, I’m a little late on this announcement (no pun intended) but it ties in well with this story on Stormland TV (by my new favorite reporter, Ms. Winters) about free and reduced lunches increasing;

SIOUX FALLS, SD – More and more families are applying for free or reduced lunch in the Sioux Falls School District.

Every year, for the past six years, the numbers have increased at the elementary, middle school and high school levels.

Make no mistake folks, over population is the root of most of our problems in this world. Global warming, hunger, war, annoying text messages, can all be blamed on it. Wear a freaking rubber for God’s sake, or for at least my sake.

Is Jeff Barth the best guy the Dems could dig up to run against Noem?

Do I want Noem as our congressperson? Hell no! In fact I would prefer an indy in that position that does not have to tow the party line. The liberal in me likes Jeff Barth. He is about as liberal as you can get, he is even a little on the nanny-stater side.

He is all about raising taxes to spend on social programs. I don’t have a problem with that, as long as the money is spent wisely. But the fiscal conservative in me doesn’t care much for Mr. Barth.

He recently wanted to raise taxes so he could give raises to county workers. Here’s the deal, I agree they deserve a raise, but don’t we all? What goes around comes around, and while the rest of are taking it in the shorts, the county workers have to also. That’s just how the cookie crumbles. They chose to work in the public sector, the pay should be reflective of society as a whole.

But the thing that worries me the most about Jeff is his chances of beating Noem. In fact I would give her 65-70% of the vote. I hope the Dems dig up someone young, smart, progressive, moderate, and with deep pockets before the primaries. Jeff isn’t going to cut the mustard.

Maybe one of those Weiland kids ain’t busy over the next year?
