While water and sewer rates go up for new pipes and a water system we don’t need, we blow our 2nd penny money on crap like this

My number one investigative reporter (Sodapop) and I went to the ‘steps in the river’ tonight to look at the progress. It really irks me when we blow $5 million dollars on something we don’t need, or will even serve a purpose, then turn around and charge higher water rates because ‘We can’t take money out of the 2nd penny for water pipes’

Oh bullshit.

You have to remember that this project was planned during the Munson administration when there was a good possibility that the EC was going to be built next to Cherapa Place. Building this silly structure now is pointless! When the money for this was allocated by the city council, Mike Cooper was asked what the $5 million was going to be spent on, and he didn’t have a clue, because they were still planning it. Yup, that’s right, he basically was asking for a blank check. While I am all for park and bike trail upgrades, we certainly do not need an amphitheatre that goes into the river and a $700,000 pedestrian bridge (when there is two of them 1/2 block away in both directions).

This is why I question water rate increases.

THE LEWIS & CLARK PIPELINE BOONDOGGLE

And while we are on that subject, I started thinking about this post I made back in 2008 when the L & C boondoggle was approved in 2006 (see cartoon) (ignore my rant about watering parks, I found out later that they use unfiltered water from the river to water parks):

The dirty little secret about Lewis & Clark is that it still isn’t a 100% done deal, we are still waiting for Federal funding, and recently Senator Johnson commented that he was not sure when that funding would come.

This is an interesting sticking point, because what we didn’t know then was that we really didn’t need L & C. Maybe that is why the FED’s were reluctant? Cotter confirmed it with me on Monday, that L & C was an emergency water source that would not be used that much. So why would the FED’s pony up? But even a bigger question arises? Why did Munson and the council take the bait, hook, line and sinker?

I remember when the bond vote came up, I told Staggers to vote against it, in fact I think I begged him. He felt he had ‘no choice’ because the Feds were not giving them the money. And guess what. We know why!

Can we make lay-off requests?

As I reported in May, the Hightower Lowdown was telling us about the troubles of Gannett (they own the Argue Endorser)

At Argus Leader Media in Sioux Falls, layoffs included nine full-time and three part-time positions.

I won’t say any names, but you will notice someone is missing from the ED board, and the AL may not be having any ‘Community Conversations’ in the near future.

Okay, this is no laughing matter, I was laid off from a cushy job two years ago, and I have had many friends that have been laid off. So I think I have earned the right to make light of this.

In the future, if the AL is going to layoff people, they should tell readers in advance, especially about reporters they may be laying off, so we can make requests. I’m just saying.

Who is running this organization?

I got an email from these people today. I would like to know who is behind this, if anyone knows please comment.

This made me laugh at the header: South Dakota’s #1 Weekly Email Newspaper. I’m guessing it is probably not too hard to be #1 when you are the only one in that club. I’m just sayin’. I agree with a lot of their ‘propaganda’ – Noem is two-faced, Thune is a tool, and Republicans suck. But to call yourself a ‘Newspaper’? A, yeah, right. Maybe I should start telling people I am a newspaper . . . better not, I might get laid off, there is already enough out of work newspaper reporters this week.

Music club w/Fishbone (H/T – AG)

AG and I got to meet Angelo when Fishbone played in Sioux Falls last time at a private meet and greet, very cool, one of the most influential ska/punk bands of the last 20 years. The best part is that Angelo isn’t a pretentious fuck, you would think you were talking to your neighbor about lawnmowers.

Sorry, the Arena location is a bad site

As I have pointed out, several times, I don’t support a new events center, because I really do not think there is a need, BUT if voters approve this, it needs to be built any place besides the Arena site. I have suggested it at Dawley Farm, by the Empire Mall or Downtown, but some people think we need to just start rubberstamping the shit out of the Mayor’s suggested site;

Regrettably, many business leaders made it clear that they will not support building the events center if it is at the Arena site. I hope their opinions were only an attempt to sway the council vote, and they will get on board with this important step forward for our city.

Why? While I think some people within BID have been a little over the top, I commend them for standing up for what they believe in, I especially commend Dave Billion Jr. for putting his name on the line and speaking out.

In particular, I want David Billion to know that the two vehicles we drive, which were purchased from his dealerships, will be the last.

Why support a business that doesn’t want to support our city?

First off, I will never buy an American vehicle ever again, German is the only way to go, so I don’t blame you for not wanting to buy that crap, but to refuse based on the fact that Dave’s opinion is different then yours is just childish. Dave did something that the old skool uptight rich farts in this town would never do, he questioned the status quo for the betterment of the community, and he put his name on the line to do it. Saying that David doesn’t support this city is like saying the Hamburglar only eats chicken McNuggets. Grow a brain. We need more David Billions in this town and less Dave Kempers.
