South DaCola LTE – Dam Nonsense

When there’s flooding republicans get together and (with help) fill a single sandbag.  The problem at Pierre is an opportunity for media  time.  DoorStop (Daurguard) gets his face on the news.  So that’s what the default governor looks like.  Thune shows up with a bomber jacket and every hair in place.  Ever notice how the camera shoots him from chest high so he looks taller and less skinny.  There’s video of the state welfare mom (Noem) flying around in a helicopter.  The last time I flew with a token PR woman was to Deer Mtn. (12,000′) near Steamboat CO.  She nearly got us killed because the pilot was showing off with a full load at high elevation.  Helicopters struggle above 10,000′.

Here’s an idea.  It’s complicated for republicans so s-l-o-w and say PORK (aka diverted federal tax dollars) often.   BUILD ANOTHER DAM; somewhere between Fort Thompson and Pickstown, somewhere to put more water, and somewhere that’s rural but mostly flood plain.

‘DO A DAMN DAM WITH PORK FROM BILLS OBAMA WANTS PASSED’

It’s common sense like PORK for breakfast.  How about hydroelectric so it’ll pay for itself and so we don’t have to raise food or ship coal for energy.  Next year could be drought.  Maybe some irrigation to raise PORK feed.  The Missouri River through South Dakota has more shoreline (both sides) than the west coast of the US.  Add more and build parks with tourist trap stores where they sell PORK rinds.  Jobs during construction and created thereafter!  What do jobs have to do with PORK?

I only cussed once and I got in some politician PORK roast.  SouthDaCola is the only site where there’s freedom of speech and circulation outside from sewing circles.  The Argus screens all but canned or properly biased material.  How do you get into the KELO web site?  PORK is better digested with some COLA.

Huge gap between rich & poor in SD skews report

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist or even a hot dog vendor to figure out this report is poppycock;

The low cost of living boosts South Dakota’s per capita personal income for 2009 from $38,374, ranked 26th, to $45,900. Sioux Falls’ RPR is 88.6 with an adjusted per capita personal income of $45,100.

Per capita. What a bullshit way of determining wealth and income in South Dakota. We all know the separation of the rich and poor in this state is huge;

Nesiba (ECON PROF, Augie) said the study would have been better if it used median incomes rather than per capita income.

I think the per capita average inflates the overall perceived welfare of South Dakota,” because a small number of people with high incomes can skew the data.

He added that while it’s clear that South Dakota has a lower cost of living, the study doesn’t show the full picture. He cited the number of people using housing assistance or food stamps and the fact that the state has a high number of working moms, for instance.

“I think all of those things are motivated by the fact that we have low wages,” he said.

I would love to see the numbers. Who is making 45 grand a year, who makes below that and who makes above that? Is cost of living in SD low? Sure. Wanna know why? Because business knows if they would charge more for their services they would have no customers.

To Snowgate or NOT to Snowgate, that is the question.

Mayor Huether doesn’t want to ‘Pull the Trigger’ yet.

Citywide use of snowgates is unlikely next winter. Officials are in the process of putting together next year’s budget, and it doesn’t appear that more snowgates will be included. Regardless, Mayor Mike Huether said he wants to test the devices again next winter.

“In business, we would test things multiple times before we would pull the trigger,” he said.

In other words They work really well and we need to test (sabotage) them one more year before killing them;

Snowgate proponent Theresa Stehly said she’s happy the issue’s going to be discussed, but she questions the city’s need to continue studying the issue. Simply put, they’re popular with residents.

“I’ve heard rumors that they’re going to keep them going until they can nail the coffin shut,” she said.

C’mon Big ‘T’ can we be a little more positive like the mayor:

Even so, Huether said he knows there’s popular support for the devices. That’s why it’s important to get an accurate cost-benefit analysis.

“It’s one of those balancing things,” he said. “You’re trying to balance the needs of the city, the wants of the public, and trying to balance that with the other parts of government. And that’s what we’re going to try and do.”

Blah, Blah . . . Blah, Blah, Blah (we need money for an events center) Blah, Blah, Blah.

The new casino will have tons of new entertainment, that I knew would compete with SF, especially the Pavilion;

“Frank Caliendo on June 17th and June 18th, and in July we have Charlie Daniels Band. In August, Bret Michaels, so it’ll be kind of a fun place,” Haselhoff said as she listed off the shows the event center will host in the first few months.

It amazes me how Iwegians have figured out how to pull this stuff together in less then a year, while the Pavilion has been fumbling around for over 10 years, and they still cannot decide whether R & R is appropriate. Take a chill pill already.

South DaCola LETTERS to the EDITOR

I’m encouraging anyone who has a gripe about our state or city to send South DaCola ‘Letters to the Editor’ to fb.art@sio.midco.net They can be ‘R’ rated and you can remain anon. I don’t care. BUT, I will reject any letter I wish and will make minor edits (like typos, etc).

Let’s get it on.
