Nothing funnier than a drunk monkey

Watch the elephants knock the fruit out of the tree and all the animals eat it off the ground. This is a real video from a French documentary about Africa. There are trees that  grow in Africa which, once a year, produce very juicy fruit that contain a high percentage of  alcohol. The tree is known as the “Elephant Tree,” because elephants have a fondness for the fruit. Because there is a shortage of water in that area, as soon as the fruits are ripe, animals  come there to help relieve themselves of the heat. You will easily know who had over-indulged…on purpose or not!

PS. The tree  is the Marula tree. You can buy a great liqueur named “Amarula,” which is made with the  fruit and cream.

Blame the greedy SF Parks Board

This letter writer has legitimate concerns;

We went to the Sioux Falls Parks Department to reserve a spot at a city park. In the past, you gave the parks department a check for using a spot. Then you got it back.

You don’t get your money back anymore. The parks department keeps the $25. (We paid $30 because we changed our mind on the spot.)

I thought that’s why we pay taxes.

Must be the new mayor’s idea.

It wasn’t Mike’s idea, this change happened at the end of Munson’s term, but it wasn’t his decision either, it was the greedy parks board to squeeze more money out of people. They claim they needed to charge that amount to ‘change the garbage bags at the shelters’ after a picnic. I guess a smarter thing would be to ask people who use the shelter to pickup their own trash, and if they don’t do that, charge them. Our parks should be FREE to use, it is one of the things that makes Sioux Falls a great place to live. Once we start charging for the simple pleasures in life, like having a picnic with friends and family in a public park, we really are missing the point about ‘quality of life’ amenities in Sioux Falls.

Pomp Room Reunion

Get your ass out to the Pomp Room reunion tonight. A place I wasted my youth at. I will probably be enjoying my Pomp Room two-fer favorite, So-Co on the rocks and a bottle of Bud (I know, I was young and stupid).

My top Pomp Room experiences;

1) Two married women asking me to judge their boobs (I’ll tell you the details tonight).

2) Meeting the Reverend Horton Heat

3) Fugazi

4) Stealing a bottle of Turkey from the backroom and drinking it with ZEKE.

5) Remembering how horrible and untalented Marilyn Manson was.

6) Getting a tooth knocked out at the Supersuckers and getting a free sticker from Eddie Spaghetti because of it years later.

7) Fucking my back up stage diving (I’m surprised I am not in a wheelchair)

8) Meeting some of my best girlfriends.

I would also like to thank Ward for letting me park the cruiser in the backroom when I would ride it down and for the bouncer ‘MA’ giving me the knickname ‘Punk Ass Freak’

Would a higher entertainment tax help build a new EC?

Stormland TV did a story on the Haymarket Center that is being built in Lincoln, NE. One of the ways they are paying for it is through a 2% Occupation tax (which is really just an entertainment tax). Sioux Falls already has a 1% tax, but what if we to make it higher to not only subsidize the new EC but pay off bonds? I have often suggested a corporate entertainment tax also, maybe businesses that employee over 50 people in SF could be a part of the tax.

As a guy said at a recent Listening and Learning session, (54:00 MIN) “Businesses need to have a little skin in the game.” He is right, and what a better way to do it. They are constantly harping we need more entertainment in SF so they can attract workers, well guess what, here is your opportunity to pony up.

Vote Centers and the SF School Board election

As I posted about a few weeks back, the SF School District will be using Super Precincts or Vote Centers, whatever you want to call them, for the School Board election on Tuesday (May 24). Didn’t hear about it? Probably not. Besides a couple of stories in our local rag, there hasn’t been much fanfare. This election is important, because they will be testing a new system.

The School Board will hold its Election to fill one vacancy when the term of Debbie D. Hoffman expires in July.  The School District’s annual Election will be held May 24, 2010 from 7:00 A.M. until 7:00 P.M.  The District will conduct its Election in using 10 polling locations.  SDCL 13-7-28 allows the District to use electronic pollbooks and Vote Centers for its 2011 election.  With the use of the electronic pollbooks and Vote Centers, voters registered in the Sioux Falls School District will be allowed to vote in any one of the ten locations (for more information please click here (Changes in Voting Procedures for 2011).

If you read the PDF, you will see that you can vote AT ANY location as long as you have a valid ID. This is a great idea, long past due and something our city clerk, Debra Owen has been working on for awhile. And while this is great news to make voting easier I’m puzzled why there has been little to no media about it. Talk about mass confusion come Tuesday. Besides the media saying little about it, the school district has done little to publicize it either. I think they should have sent out a postcard to all the registered voters explaining the new election process. This probably wouldn’t have cost them over $10,000. But I guess in this democracy called Sioux Falls informing voters is a waste of money. Unfortunate really. It’s not like voter turnout is ever that high during school board elections, we have a history of low voter turnout, and not informing voters about Vote Centers will only make the turnout lower IMO. We’ll see on Tuesday, I guess.
