More lawsuits against the city of Sux Falls

While our Mayor is dreaming about Events Centers, cotton candy and streets paved of gold, it seems he has to deal with another lawsuit spawned by the past administration. Nevermind the one that was postponed this week about sewer backups from several years ago – remember when we got like 20 inches of rain in 2 days? (yes, kids, this is our very expediate judicious system). Nope this one is about charging businesses that don’t benefit from promoting entertainment and hospitality downtown to paying extra property taxes for promotion they don’t receive;

The lawsuit from Red Buffalo Trading Co. Inc. comes eight months after a similar lawsuit from Ronning Cos. and two months before the City Council votes on whether to renew the tax assessment.

The legal battles, as well as increasing expectations for DTSF from the public, could lead to changes in the way DTSF is financed.

Twenty-two percent of DTSF’s money is from the assessment collected by the Main Street Business Improvement District (BID). That’s why DTSF president Jason Dennison said finding a way to maintain the assessment while still satisfying the group’s membership is crucial.

Without our member-sponsors and the assessment, we really wouldn’t be able to do what we do,” Dennison said.

What do you do? I think it is time to pull the plug on DTSF. Downtown is prospering fine on it’s own, and downtown businesses can do what other businesses do on their own, MARKET THEMSELVES! It’s time to get rid of this special interest front. We already have a Chamber of Commerce, why do DT businesses need a special marketing organization?

A South DaCola sports story (H/T – Hos)

I had kinda forgot about this until Hos reminded me this morning. Over ten years ago I had a couple of tickets to the Legends baseball game at Canaries stadium. I didn’t really care, but I thought it would be a waste to not use the tickets, plus it would be fun to watch a bunch of old geezers hit some balls around. I can’t recall how many were there, but it was a slew, Harmon Killebrew was one of them. I took Hos’ son Tyler, I don’t think he really cared much, but I figured a few hours of sanity away from him was good for her. I also remember the little money me and him had on us we spent on some dogs or something. Well it came around to selling raffle tickets to win a signed Willie Mays ball, and I didn’t have enough dough. This nice lady behind us bought Tyler a raffle ticket, and he won the ball. Turns out she was Harmon’s wife and she got all the guys to sign another baseball for Tyler. It was pretty cool. Not sure if Tyler has either one of the balls still, probably sold them for a geetar or something.

Noem’s Home Life

Noem comments on her home life since she has become our US Congressperson;

STORMLAND ENDORSER NEWS By Angela Kannotinterview

It’s a Friday night in the Noem home and Kristi’s made crow. This dinner table scene is just like thousands of others being played out across the state, only in this case the meal didn’t come from a food pantry.

“It is kind of like two different worlds I feel like I’m living in; Washington, D.C., has a whole different schedule, lifestyle, different work out there. When I come back here it’s a nice stopover on my way to California to raise money for my re-election campaign.” Noem said.

Noem spends several days a week in Washington, D.C., and then more time traveling across the state. But she says that doesn’t keep her from spending time with her three kids: 17-year-old Kassidy, 14-year-old Kennedy and 8-year-old Booker.

“I have them come with me a lot. If we go to Lincoln Day dinners, a meeting or a flood meeting, I have them come along. Last week I had Booker drive the family Suburban and showed him what backroads to take to avoid speeding tickets. He got pretty giddy while doing 95 mph on old HW 15 1/2, especially since he couldn’t see over the steering wheel,” Noem said.

When she is in Washington, Noem uses modern technology to stay in touch with her kids and husband, Bryon.

“One night when I was in D.C., I was going to do a TV show on a network and Cassidy texted me and said, ‘Good job, mom.’ I said, ‘Wait a minute.  It’s a Friday night and you’re watching the news? Shouldn’t you be drinking Busch Light in some pasture with the rest of your hick friends?'” Noem said.

Noem may be a rising star in the Republican Party in Washington, but when she gets back home to the ranch, it’s back to the daily chores.

“Coming back to the ranch, putting in fence for the weekend, working with the animals. I want them to see us doing that and doing that as a family. The day we built the mile of fence over on the west side, it rained. It was windy. It was miserable and it took forever,” Noem said. “I felt bad for my children that they had to put up with the same thing EVERY other farm kid has to in this state on a daily basis. They are the children of a US Congressperson for God’s sake.”

Four years ago, Noem and her husband tore down an old drafty farmhouse and built a new house at their ranch. She says the Rakota Valley Ranch is in her blood.

“I have loved this place since my dad bought it when I was little. I remember driving in the yard with him and saying, ‘Let’s give this place an Indian name,'” Noem said.

Noem sold the cattle to allow more time for her campaign. Now, there are just horses and dolphins on their ranch.

“Got some gophers we need to shoot out here,” Noem said “Newt gave me some AK-47’s that should work just fine.”

But you can throw one more wrench in that hectic schedule. Noem, who faced criticism during the campaign for not completing her college degree, has gone back to school finish up, hopefully in December.

“I enjoy learning new things; the reading materials. Now at this point in my life, I appreciate the classes more than I did when I was younger, even though I don’t have a passing grade in Poli-sci,” Noem said.

Noem says she’s used to being busy and says she can successfully manage all the aspects of her life, both public and private.

“It’s a lot of things on your plate. I don’t know a mom that doesn’t have a lot of things to juggle. I mean, most South Dakota mothers have multiple jobs due to Republican policies I help set. Hey, I say buck up. We’re raising kids; we have different jobs or things taking up our time, like standing in the WIC line, filling out medicaid paperwork or doing our makeup for a fundraiser at Georgetown. I miss speeding past those welfare mamas in my big truck and yelling at them,” Noem said.

But Bryon says he never doubted that his wife was meant for great things.

“Yeah, and I still married her even though I knew she’d probably do something like this someday. And it had nothing to do with me getting her preggers. No, I knew she had a special calling in her life and I remember going back all through our marriage and she said, ‘I just feel like I’m called to do something big.’  And then she did a keg stand after her first rodeo, I thought this is the big thing, and when she got her 10th speeding ticket, I thought that was the big thing. And I’m hoping this is the big thing, this is the big thing she’s called to do, but who knows, she has me so whipped I forget my name sometimes,” Bryon said.

The Noems say no matter where Kristi’s political career takes her, they plan to stay grounded.

“We do not want to become thinking we’re a big deal. She’s not that way. We don’t want to become that way. We are here.  We live in South Dakota, we’re from South Dakota and we’ll remain that way. We’re going to go talk to people in the restaurant, go to a movie, go to church; we’re going to be normal Republicans who put on a big act then fuck the little man over at the end of the day, that’s just how we are,” Bryon said.

Thank Gawd Bob Litz is at the helm

This scares me a bit, and makes me a little sick;

Minnehaha County auditor Bob Litz says the county might need to cut back by at least 7 percent in 2012, based on early income and cash flow numbers.

Litz says cash on hand in March was $1.35 million, when it is typically about $4 million at that time of year. He says expenses are running nearly $6 million over income each month.

Commissioners approved a $64 million budget for 2011. That was more than $22,000 less than the 2010 budget.

I just hope they find money for a decorating budget for Bob’s office. Though the cardboard boxes do match his skin tone.

The Ugly Table, But even better (H/T – Hos)

I think this guy is my twin.

I loved this part from this post;

If you happen to see guests saying grace before the meal, pause for them to finish. — jiminboulder

In all my years of working in restaurants, I have never seen a waiter interrupt someone saying grace. I can’t imagine that ever happening. I think this person just wanted to get their name on the list so they came up with this non-existent issue. If it’s a real problem, maybe they should pray about it.

While this may not be hilarious to you, I enjoyed it for a number of reasons 1) He is right, I have never interrupted someone who is praying 2) his line ‘maybe they should pray about it.’ cracked me up and 3) This isn’t about grace, this is about customer’s who make shit up to bitch about.

Which leads me to a story, not a poem. There was this lady who would come to my place of employment every couple of weeks, and she would complain every time about her steak not being cooked right, not to me everytime, but to every single server that ever waited on her. I noticed this after awhile, and whenever she would walk through the door I would warn the server who waited on her, and no matter how hard they tried to get her steak right, it was always wrong. Then she would get it for FREE (because she would eat most of it – then complain). Why would she keep coming back to a place that cooks her food wrong? If I have a bad experience – bye, bye. Well it dawned on me, because she understood the scam. It was obvious she wasn’t a picky eater, she weighs well over 300 lbs. Anyway, I was salivating to wait on her again. Bam, one night I got her again. And I bent over backwards. I repeated the steak temp and color to her TWICE. I told the grill chef to cook it perfectly, I told the owner and the FOH manager and they all noted it. Sure enough, end of the meal, I went to the table to ask if they wanted the dessert. She left two bites on the plate (everything else was gone) and bitched it wasn’t cooked enough. I was livid. I told her that I would talk to a manager, well apparently I whisked the plate away too fast, so when the FOH manager talked to her about comping her steak, for the 900th time, she told her that I was the biggest asshole she ever met because I took the plate so fast. Well I got into trouble over it, but I also accomplished something, she hasn’t returned. Wanna no why? I caught her at her game.
