Seriously though, drive safely around construction sites.

  1. So after being tore up for most of last summer, the exact same intersection on 41st and Louise is being worked on again.

  2. They are doing spot repairs – oddly enough we have this season called “winter” which results in water leaking down into the cracks of a road surface where they “freeze” which causes what we call “expansion” which then results in cracked and broken concrete.

Ok so I’m a little sarcastic, but the point is due to the age of that intersection and the amount of traffic it gets, they will need to do a certain amount of spot repair every year since different areas need repairing. Eventually it will just make more sense to tear out entire sections / lanes and start over, but for now they are simply cutting out the worst pieces where there is damage and potholes and repairing them.

In theory they could add an asphalt overlay over the entire thing which helps keep moisture out of the cracks and can extend the lifespan a few years, but I don’t expect that to happen. Personally even though it is a hassle to go through it, I’m glad they are on top of it rather than trying to band-aid it by filling in those holes with hot mix. No matter how many times they try, you simply cannot fill a concrete road pothole with asphalt and expect it to last.

We are still about five years behind on maintenance though. Who needs roads when we have levys to raise and Sanford Events Centers to build?
