This Lake Andes Motel sounds like a good place to stay . . . that is, if you are white and Republican.

I’m all for freedom of speech, and think it is fantastic that these people wear their racism on their sleeves (probably in the form of an armband) even though they seem to be in denial;

Mary Snyder swears to the Mitchell Daily Republic that she and her husband are just misspellers, not racists.

Yeah . . . right. If you don’t like black people, pull off your white hood and just say it. That is the beauty of our country, you don’t have to like people, and you don’t even have to be informed about why you don’t like them.

  1. Well done on the image update!

  2. I think your image is more offending than what they did. You don’t know them or what the real situation is and I think it was an honest mistake. Besides racists talk about racists any ways.

  3. XD – Give me a break. They know EXACTLY what they did! I am offended you would defend them.

  4. xdsteel: baloney. You are wishing away the obvious.

  5. If you read the daily republic article it also gives the impression she also called blacks the “n” word. So yes, I’m sure it was an honest mistake.

  6. If you read both sides of the sign it reads:

“Build this, Obama, $16 trillion, Don’t Renig” on one side and “Vote American, Don’t Renig” on the other.

So let’s break this down for a second. If you change the term to “Renege” neither side makes any sense. There is no context to what they don’t want to “renege”. Since the voters voted for Obama in 2008, to “renege” on that decision or statement would be to vote him out of office…. but they are saying DON’T “renege” which says they want to keep Obama in office…. which we know based upon their comments they most certainly do not want.

Plus, the “Vote American” line is a clear reference to the whole birther movement which claims Obama isn’t an American citizen. The phrase “don’t renig” is well known from a line of offensive bumper stickers and t-shirts found for sale on the Internet.

To make matters worse, Mary Snyder was quoted in The Daily Republic as dropping the n-word! Are you flipping serious here?? She didn’t just make a reference to the n-word”… she actually said it when speaking with a reporter! Had she actually just said “a racist term” or “the n word” they would have quoted her as such, but because she actually dropped the n-bomb, the reporter had to censor the term in print. WTF! Who speaks like that these days – never mind when you are speaking to a reporter who you KNOW will print what you are saying?!?!?!!?

These racist birthers knew full well what they were putting on their sign, and they are disgusting. Honestly anyone who defends racism is almost as disgusting as the racists themselves.

  7. Craig I feel sorry for you if you really believe the crap you just said. I think there is much more than what the article is saying and like any media they only want headlines. I think they meant to say something else and they made a mistake. SO WHAT! It happens. Obviously they feel pretty bad about misunderstanding. I am sure that they can come up with something much more clever if they wanted to make a racist statement.

Oh that is pretty clever, they just got caught. But for the people staying at that motel, I doubt it will bother them much.

  9. It is painfully obvious you haven’t even bothered to read the actual article or the quotes directly from Snyder’s mouth.

Do you run around using the n-word in casual conversation? I don’t. Would you utter than word as if it is ok when speaking to a reporter? I wouldn’t. They claim they misspelled the word, but even the proper spelling doesn’t mean anything. If they knew what the word meant, even if they didn’t know the spelling – it still doesn’t make any sense in the context they attempted to use it in.

So your defense of these people is that they are morons who don’t understand the words they choose to put on a sign in front of their business, yet they are smart enough to run a business and maintain a Facebook page for their hotel? Your defense is that they don’t understand English, spelling, or context, yet they do know what the current level of debt is and they even go out of their way to ensure the apostrophe is included within the word “Don’t”?? Really xd? Really??

You seem to want to blame the “media” but the story is right in front of your eyes and you refuse to see it. You are defending racists who aren’t even smart enough to hide their racism, and then you go on to say “obviously they feel pretty bad”? Really??

Where is the apology for offending people? Where is the explanation on their facebook page for ‘inadvertently’ using a racist expression? Where is the explanation behind what they ‘really’ meant to say?

Rather than apologizing or clarifying, they merely went on the offensive by saying it was ridiculous and people think they are “slandering, uh, n*****s”. Not “uh, black people” xd… not “uh, the President” xd… but “uh, n*****s”.

Thanks for letting me know that the last line of my original post was not wasted, because as it turns out there really are people like that among us. At least the Snyder’s had the spinal fortitude to put their racism right out there in front of us instead of reaching for pathetic excuses to hide it.

  10. Tell you what. if they are soo racist like you say they whocares. If they haven’t changed by now then its a low chance that they ever will. The editor of the paper should not have ran the story because personally it is not worth it. Let them be racist and stop losing sleep over it.

Craig I don not go around uttering the n-word around in casual conversation, but you wouldn’t like my conversations anyway.Craig I can’t tell you what they meant to say. Only they know. I really don’t give a sh*t..oops I used a swear word. Do I owe you an apology for offending your delicate little feelings?

  11. You make me laugh xd. So now the media shouldn’t report a story because you don’t feel it is worth it? That makes sense… guess they need to run things by you before they run with a story to make sure you’re OK with it.

Meanwhile back on Earth the media runs stories that are newsworthy. Blatant racism is newsworthy in my opinion, because it ensures those people who respect others regardless of skin color most likely won’t be renting a motel room from the Snyder’s during Pheasant season this year.

You can believe what you want, but I don’t think racism will go away just because people stop talking about it. In fact remaining silent has rarely resulted in a problem solving itself. Just ask Rosa Parks or Martin Luther King Jr.

Replace racism with something else and ask yourself if remaining silent solves the issue. Look at something like domestic abuse – a women who remains silent after her boyfriend/husband/significant other slaps her around every now and then probably won’t see much progress. Yet a women who speaks out can change behavior. Perhaps the man will end up behind bars. Perhaps she can get counseling to help her get out from under the abuse. Perhaps others will help her. Any way you slice it, the abuse has a much greater chance of going away when you address it head on… not when you cover it up with makeup, big sunglasses, and perhaps most of all EXCUSES for the abuser (or racist).

I don’t expect the Synders to change their racist views merely because they were called out for them… but it might make someone else think twice, and it might replace ignorance with a bit of education and discussion.

You have yourself a good day.

Put it this way – if they did just make a moronic spelling mistake, which is very possible, they are getting hammered for it.

I do have a question, if one was going to use this word, how does one or you spell it?

  13. Renege: (verb) Go back on a promise, undertaking, or contract.

So as you can see, if one looks at it from the perspective of the actual term, to renege would be to go back on the undertaking of supporting Obama (since he is the current / sitting President). Thus to say don’t renege, would be to say you want to keep the current path… and since we know the Synders are not exactly fans of Obama based upon their billboard, one of two possibilities exist.

    1. They are not only bad spellers, but they use words that they don’t appear to understand the definition of. They might as well have said “don’t thermometer”… because it makes as much sense.

    2. They were attempting to use a clever (racist) play on words to suggest we should not re-hire what they deem to be our un-American black President.

Now before we give them the benefit of the doubt and think it might be option 1, keep in mind Mrs. Synder dropped the n-word when interviewed about the situation, and they failed to offer any sort of apology for offending anyone. In fact rather than discuss the issue on their Facebook page, they opted to delete the page and claim they have a right to say whatever they want due to the First Amendment.

I of course agree they have the right to say whatever they want, and I will defend that right for them, but that doesn’t preclude people from labeling them as the racists they are.

  14. I bet they didn’t even come up with that awful pun. I’m sure one of those wonderful forwarded emails contained the joke, and after it was explained to them they just howled!

I would agree. While most people are disgusted by our Freedom of Speech rights, it is people like this, who practice them, that expose the REAL America. I know all kinds of South Dakotans who are just like the Snyders. When Obama was running against McCain, one of my SD relatives said to me, “I may not like n*****s, but I hate Republicans more, so I will vote for Obama.”
