People who steal art are skanks. Especially people who steal art from charity events;

“It’s not like it happened to me, they stole from charity,” Zebell said.

The “Artist Fighting Hunger” event is meant for artists throughout the community to get exposure and raise money for Feeding South Dakota. The artists in charge of “Artist Against Hunger” are shocked.

There are many crimes that have many levels of punishment, etc. But I have often thought thieves should get extra time. I quit a job this past year, and I had several reasons why, besides being underpaid and overworked (literally) and management and owners being greedy and nasty. Something happened shortly before I quit. A select few of the staff (including myself) were being investigated for skimming the till. This is frustrating for a couple of reasons; 1) When your employer doesn’t trust you, it creates tension and distrust for both you and your employer, and 2) One of my co-workers was a thief, and they were getting me in hot water. There is nothing more embarrassing then being brought in a room and being questioned about stealing. Nothing. While I felt the questioning and the camera investigation was handled very well, I felt the aftermath was a total sham. Once they figured out what happened (I don’t have the full story to this day, but as I understand it, it was sloppy accounting, and the rounding up or down of CC tips) there was never an apology to employees for accusations.

Don’t steal. But more importantly, if you suspect someone is stealing, take the high road and just ask them to stop. This is what they are asking of the latest incident;

In both these cases, neither parties contacted authorities they just want their priceless pieces back.

“I hope they have a change of heart and give it back,” Zebell said.

“They can return it, they can walk in here, put a bag on the floor and I won’t ask a question, just get it back to the people who rightfully own it,” Bormes said.

Sioux Falls, stop being skanks. I see they didn’t even attempt to steal Bettie

  1. I wonder what the picture was of. or about. And now they are saying that 4 paintings were stolen. $100 was the estimated value so do these art thieves sell it in some alley for $50 or hang it in their family room?

  2. Duk – I would agree. Make them work to pay back every penny. I have never understood putting embezzlers in prison, What? So they can embezzel more from us? Put them on house arrest and make them sweep sidewalks for 10 years until they pay back there debt.

  3. I have had second cousins go back to the homeland, Czechoslovakia, for a visit. They claim that crime is almost nill. As they punish accordingly, for the crime that is committed. A punishment for stealing is cutting off their hand. Can you imagine some of the other punishments! I think this country is too soft on criminals.

  4. Well, I doubt they cut people’s hands off anymore in Czech Republic, unless it is a Slavik Mafia deal gone bad. But I am sure there are still countries that do it. I think cutting off someone’s hand is kinda stupid, they still have the other hand to steal with.

  5. Learned a couple months ago that one of my ex’s brither, husband and brother-in-law just got convicted of Federal insider trading violation in which they made off with $5MM. The fines? $50K each. Of course they also got 3 years prison time (probably do 14 months) and a life-time ban from being lcensed traders – but…….nice new house in the Hollywood Hills. And of course – they don’t think it’s “fair”, because “no one was hurt”.

  6. The artist can take a 1K theft loss and save $280 in taxes. If the thief ate it, it went for the intentioned cause.

  7. Don’t get me wrong – theft is theft, but I have to laugh that they mention the four pieces were valued at a total of $1000, but later on they are called “priceless”.

    Something tells me whoever decided to use the term priceless (whether it was one of the artists or the reporter) doesn’t really understand what the word means. Sure some art is priceless – because you cannot put a price to it, but when you say something is worth about $250… well then it is worth about $250. Seems pretty clear cut.

    I have to wonder though – should the thief or thieves who were responsible be treated any worse for stealing art than they would if they stole $1,000 worth of sports equipment from Scheels or $1,000 worth of jewelry from Riddles?

    People seem to have different scales of theft. Stealing from a independent shop is bad. Stealing from a charity is really bad. Stealing from the Girl Scouts is grounds for execution. Stealing from a major retailer isn’t a huge deal. Stealing from a major corporation isn’t even a crime in some eyes. Stealing from the government is considered retribution or fair play.

    As far as thieves getting “extra time”… I guess it depends in comparison to what? Should someone who steals a $250 painting be punished more than someone who beats a homeless person just because they looked at them wrong? What about someone who commits rape? Or someone who molests a child? How about a six time drunk driver who puts lives in danger time and time again?

    Tough call on this one DL. Thieves are scum… but are they any worse than the average criminal? I guess as far as non-violent crime I’ll say they are up there with the worst of them, but then again if someone is stealing food I probably don’t look at them the same way as someone who is stealing DVDs and iPods. Unless of course they are stealing porterhouse steaks just because they are too cheap to pay for them… because that’s just sad.

  8. I see your point. When I got my painting vandalized I asked for $1250 (I said that it was worth $5000 and I wanted a 1/4 of it’s worth to fix it, and I did fix it, with a $3 bottle of white out, some collage, paint and gloss coat). I bought my privacy fence with the remaining $1247. Some would say I should have asked for less, I looked at this as a way to set an example of someone who thinks it is okay to either destroy or steal someone’s art.
