A South DaCola foot soldier sent this to me:

This e-mail was forwarded to me just now. My brother’s customer received this yesterday and the offending trailer went home this morning.  This trailer license was traced to —‘s company. Someone with DMV access?

Hello,

I was just wondering if your are aware that a trailer registered to your company has been sitting in a residential driveway on ——-th St. in Sioux Falls, SD for over a month now? Do you not own any commercial property that it can be stored on instead of it being an eyesore to this neighborhood?

Is someone with the city’s code enforcement office acting outside of work on their own, and using a fake name? I’m just curious, not speculating – who has access to DMV records besides government employees? Can I do a search of a license plates online myself?

  1. I’m guessing this is probably someone who lives in the area and is tired of seeing a trailer in the neighborhood, but it might also be someone with a lot of free time who cruises around and looks for code violations.

In most states you can access DMV records by simply asking and paying a few bucks per plate number. Not sure if that is allowed in SD or not, but in many states it is simply a matter of asking. As far as I know, there is no online system allowing access to these records.

Of course keep in mind if this was a commercial trailer it is possible that the person obtained the company name from signage on the side of the trailer itself. If a trailer says “ABC Handyman Service” it would be safe to assume the company owns the trailer, so that is one option.

Pretty sketchy either way though – if someone has a problem with a trailer (or boat, or junk car, or sidewalk covered in snow, or 14″ tall lawn) it seems it would be a lot easier to simply call the city code enforcement division and report it.

  2. “it seems it would be a lot easier to simply call the city code enforcement division and report it.”

LMAO! Not an option in this case.
