That is what he said in the Argue Endorser today. Even though Huether only allocates the money for the roads and the council authorizes the expenditure. In other words, if the council wanted to spend more or less they could amend the mayor’s allocation before approving it. But do you think he will ever give credit to the council for this? I remember during the Munson administration how hard several council members fought to get more money for infrastructure while Munson fumbled around with roads to nowhere and building rock and wood thingies in the parks.
Mayor Huether seems to have a lot of monickers these days, like ‘The most transparent mayor in the city’s history’ guy or the ‘Events Center’ guy or the ‘Rivergreenway Project’ guy or the (Oh My Gosh) ‘The Downtown Development’ Guy and let’s not forget my favorite, the ‘Praying & Faithful’ guy.
Who gives themselves their own nicknames anyway?
What kind of ‘GUY’ do you think he is?
I call him the ‘Full of himself’ guy.

  1. You said it yourself… Munson was messing around with yellow brick roads to nowhere while Huether has focused much more on actual infrastructure that matters. Sure the Council gets credit too, but if the Mayor takes the heat when we have potholes and decaying streets, he should also get the credit when they are improving.

We all know we were way behind in terms of infrastructure maintenance (I recall hearing we were $80M behind during Munson’s administration) and although we are far from perfect, I’d say we are headed in the right direction. So give credit where credit is due… no nicknames required.

(It is pretty sad that he gives himself nicknames, but in his defense he probably can’t use any of the names people call him in public as they aren’t PG rated)

  2. I wish somebody would challenge MMM to prove the city has actually repaired 290 miles of roads in the city since May 2010. He pulls stuff like this out of his @$$ all the time, yet nobody calls his bluff. Hopefully, Jamison will have the chutzpah to do this, hold MMM accountable, and make it an interesting race.

  3. I could give him some credit if he didn’t have to have a press conference bragging about himself for every little incident that happens in this town.

  4. Tell ya what. Compare him and his administration to some other mayors in the area and what is getting done in those towns. You can compare councils as well if you like. Then go back to bitching – if you still think it’s appropriate.

  5. Infrastructure spending is not a virtue unto itself. If you’re building dumb infrastructure (STROADs, events centers) it’s wasted money.

  6. The point is do your job and don’t feel like you need to advertise it every time you do. MMM has classic short man’s disease. Where he lacks size in other areas (I.e. his heigth) he makes up for with his mouth and pompous self promotion. “Lacking Size Guy”

  7. He’s preparing his campaign slogans for the masses who have the attention span of one sentence. He’s being politically smart for saying he has completed all those miles of road construction. Why? Because it was not tracked until he came into power so no one can say they did more or less. There’s no proof of the past, only his record. He’s smooth, no doubt about it.

  8. I did not know that Mr. Huether had Napoleon Complex. That is a bad thing to have your mayor have. I feel bad for Sioux Falls if this is true and it seems like it might be but I know Sioux Falls will survive and overcome Heutherism.

  9. Is the 290 miles including the redo work like Russell and others? It seems to me Sioux Falls has about 600 miles of streets, which means about half have been rebuilt. Did your street get rebuilt?

  10. I would say SF has closer to 2000 miles of street than 600 testor. (example rough calculation: 80 square miles of territory, 25 linear miles of street per square mile – one street per 300 feet – two directions – NS and EW)

  11. City itself claims there are 770 miles of street – must exempt federal, state and county highway miles within the city.

  12. rufusx, your calculation is probably correct for the core area of town, but in the suburban areas, I would expect lane-miles per square mile to decrease (bigger lots, bigger blocks, etc.), and sadly, most of this “city” is a suburb.
