So now ‘collectors’ are considered ‘mentally ill’ by the city

Untitled-7

Okay, I totally get it, collecting ‘garbage’ behind your house is not a good idea, and it is certainly against the law. People who urinate on other people’s property, also against the law. Are some of these people mentally ill. Maybe, maybe not, but it is not the job of the city’s code enforcement department to determine who is mentally ill;

The team includes law enforcement officials, zoning personnel and a newly hired mental health professional.

Sometimes a property owner is struggling with mental health concerns or physical limitations that prohibit him or her from completing cleanup and maintenance tasks.

A fellowship grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is paying for a health professional to be part of the enforcement team. It’s a two-year program.

Am I the only one to find it a bit ironic that a department that has been found to be unconstitutional, several times, in applying city ordinance is now questioning the mental health of it’s citizens? Isn’t ‘denial’ a mental ailment?

Is there a difference between ‘collectors’ and ‘hoarders’ – in some cases, yes. But if someone owns their property and they want to store a Beanie Bear collection on that property, that is their prerogative, whether they are mentally ill or not. See, in this country, it is not against the law to be ‘crazy’.

If someone is committing a crime, and they are mentally ill, leave it up to law enforcement and trained medical professionals to deal with those situations. If someone isn’t mowing their lawn, maybe they need to see a lawn mower repairman, not a shrink.

The EC only garners one tourney

ric

Hey, but it is wrestling, WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

While Ric Flair would be proud, one has to be a bit curious with all the tourney’s coming to Sioux Falls, the EC only gets one, and it’s wrestling;

Here’s the list of events awarded to Sioux Falls:

2015, 2016, 2018: The Sanford Pentagon will be home to women’s basketball championships.

2016: Women’s volleyball championships will take place at the Sanford Pentagon.

2016: Augustana College will host a DII regional wrestling tournament with the National Wrestling Championship taking place at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.

Division II cross country regionals will be held at Yankton Trail Park in 2016.

2017 and 2018: The Sanford Pentagon will be home to DII men’s basketball championship.

In 2018, outdoor track National Championships will be at USF.

One thing I could never figure out is why the EC task force never seriously explored expanding and refurbishing the Arena and CC instead of building a whole new facility. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I have a feeling that refurbishing the Arena would have been in competition with the Pentagon, and it is proving to be the case.

1) It was ignorant and a waste to build a whole new EC instead of refurbishing the Arena and expanding the CC.

2) The new EC will have NO permanent tenant, and apparently, can’t even score a couple of college basketball tournaments.

3) The lodging and parking issues will hamper holding any truly large event at the EC.

Do you hear that sucking sound? That’s the new EC, sucking tax dollars. Hopefully the roof won’t have to be replaced in 10 years.

Even with Mayor Huether’s recusal last night, he still had a conflict of interest

Mayor Huether recused himself from the discussion and vote on the Indoor Tennis facility last night, to avoid a conflict of interest. He also will not be signing the contract.

The fact is that it doesn’t really matter. We will get to that in a moment.

Councilor Staggers was the lone ‘NO’ vote on the contract last night;

. . . but Kermit Staggers cast the lone no vote on the tennis contract. He questioned whether there are enough tennis players in the area to support such a facility.

Even if the council would not have approved the contract last night, they have already approved the expenditure in the CIP budget earlier in the year. This was just a contract approval, not an ‘allocation’ approval.

And that is the gist of Huether’s conflict. Who prepares the CIP budget and presents it to the city council for approval? THE MAYOR! By budgeting the money for the tennis facility in the CIP budget, the mayor performed his conflict already. His ‘non’ performance last night was just smoke and mirrors.
