Should the Sioux Falls City Attorney be elected?

While watching the Charter Revision Meeting tonight, I started pondering ideas. It all started when councilor Mrs. Outdahdoorliar suggested that the council have a say in who is hired/fired for the city attorney position. While I like her idea, and understand her concerns (the city attorney having a ‘boss’ to report to) I question if there is a ‘better process’ because who does the city attorney really work for? The council? The mayor? or the citizens?

When Stehly and I were trying to get an opinion from the past city attorney Admundson, he refused, telling us to hire our own. While I partially agree with that statement, the question we are asking could only be answered by him, and the reason he wouldn’t answer it? Because he knew the answer was in our favor (as we found out later). The point is that the city attorney should be looking out for the general best interest of the citizenry, that means, ultimately not having a city council OR a mayor as their manager, but the citizens.

My suggestion would be to elect the city attorney every 4 years, just like attorney generals, judges and sheriffs. If the public wants an honest city attorney working for THEM, they need to be elected by them.

Does council candidate Erickson have a challenger for the At-Large B seat?

Even though it has not been confirmed, I just heard that planning commission member Denny Pierson may be challenging Erickson.

This is good to hear for a couple of reasons. First off, Erickson needs a challenger. Secondly, I have often liked Pierson’s citizen friendly stances on the commission.

I think Pierson will have to resign his commission seat if he decides to run. Denny is an insurance agent.

This guy needs to read the US Constitution (or least have it explained to him)

Sorry Bro, you are not contributing to the beauty of our community.

When I started reading this letter, I was waiting for the punch line at the end, and it never came;

Homeowners and businesses that do not comply with city ordinances in regards to upkeep of their property also should have fines doubled and required to pay within 30 days or doubled.

First off, the city’s code enforcement department already sends out multiple fines for one violation, which is not only questionable legally, it is probably unconstitutional. Besides the multiple fines, they really have no way of collecting them, because that process is also been found to be unconstitutional.

But the best part of Mr. Marshall Law’s letter is yet to come;

This will cause tax revenue to increase, compliance to laws/ordinances to increase as well as a safer and more beautiful city to live in.

So besides being a grumpy old ‘stay off my lawn’ man, he feels these stringent penalties should be implemented to make our city prettier. So a word of warning to all you long haired bearded folk of the community, get a shave and a haircut or you will be fined, double.

Did the airlines play the bait and switch on consumers?

I found this Stormland-TV story leaves you with more questions, then answers;

The average ticket price spiked 24 percent in the last three years.

Sioux Falls Airport Authority hoped that adding airlines and more flights would make flying more affordable, but that hasn’t happened.

“This flight on Allegiant for the two of us was a little over $800 and we’re used to paying $200 or $250 round trip.  That’s the difference of $300 more,” passenger Erlyce Pekas said.

“A lot of airlines have removed flights so there are only a certain number of flights that will leave Sioux Falls or connect to other destinations.  If those flights are full and they can continue to fill them at the higher price, we’re going to see those prices high,” Buus said.

First question I have is what did the SF Airport Authority, city officials and the Mayor know when they were promoting more affordable air travel out of Sioux Falls? While I commend all three for getting us more flights, I wonder just ‘what’ the airlines promised Sioux Falls officials? Was there ever a contract or goodwill contract signed about airfares and increases? Are the airlines playing bait and switch with consumers, and did these officials know that was the plan all along?

Like I said, bringing in more options is great, but if the airlines are using the opportunity to gouge us now it seems the new popularity of air travel out of Sioux Falls is fleeting.

But remember, like most ‘growth’ ideas out of city hall, it’s about closing the deal and the ‘short term’ benefits. I’m not accusing MMM of anything nefarious here, in fact, I doubt he knew what the long term plans were for the airlines to increase fares, nor did he even care. Funny how all of this expansion and availability at the SF Airport is starting to look more and more like a certain Credit Card’s interest rate after 90 days.
