One more reason Krebs is not qualified to be SOS

While reading one of Lalley’s meandering columns about Skunk Creek/Big Sioux pollution I found this little tidbit about Shantel interesting;

The rather difficult bit to stomach is the reaction from the lawmakers whose job it is to guard our natural resources, in this case Sens. Shantel Krebs of Renner and Jason Frerichs of Wilmot. They represent their parties as the top managers of the Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee.

And their message, as relayed by Harriman’s reporting, was clear: “Everything is fine.”

Both said they see no need for further regulation.

Both also pointed to urban run-off and lawn chemicals as a contributor to pollution. It’s true, that’s a point of discussion, but it ignores the larger issue.

While Frerichs just kind of throws his hands in the air and blames farmers who probably won’t work with government, Krebs IS a small farmer who probably is polluting the Big Sioux herself. It seems Krebs is happy with the status quo (unless she is working hard to make the referendum and initiative process harder so she can keep good standing with her favorite organization ALEC). This is the kind of person we want for our next SOS? Krebs doesn’t want to improve the lives of South Dakotans, which includes cleaning up the pollution in the Secretary of State’s office. Maybe Krebs as SOS will just continue the blatant prejudice against the Native Americans, continue screwing up the voter lists, continue to let Republican candidates to break the rules while turning in the Dems for breaking the same rules. Maybe she thinks ‘Everything is fine’ in the office, just like she thinks nothing should be done to fix the polluted Big Sioux. I have a feeling that if Krebs wins in November we will just have ourselves a skinnier blonde as SOS, not much else will change, it may even get worse.

As for Krebs’ challenger, Angela Schultz, I have only heard good things. A stellar resume (I didn’t see shoe salesperson in there though).

Video from the SF City Council working session

The Council had their last working session on Wednesday 25. Here are the recordings (4 separate videos) meetings. I apologize for the bad audio, the ventilation/circulation system is constantly running in this room, so it was hard to get good audio.

The council discussed several things, such as legislative priorities. The council wants the city to have control over taxation within the city. It is a contentious and confusing priority because of the way the city and state choose to fund government, thru regressive sales taxes. The gist was the council wants to be able to raise the penny sales tax when they want a special project built, like an Events Center (of course with the consent of the citizens through a vote, LOL).

The council also discussed the Citizen’s Survey questions. I emailed councilor Erickson about some of my concerns with the survey, specifically if any surveys are sent to city employees who live in Sioux Falls (city employees should not be giving themselves high marks that only skew the survey results). I also said the question about feeling safe Downtown creates a perception that DT is unsafe.

Why was the governor’s debate on education cancelled?

Independent candidate for governor, Mike Myers, told me yesterday that there is to be four scheduled governor debates with all three candidates. One of the debates to be on SDPTV was cancelled due to ‘scheduling’. Mike wonders if Daugaard bailed on the debate and this is why it was cancelled? Mike asked an even more perplexing question, “If Dennis can’t attend the debate, why can’t there still be a debate between Wismer and I?” Good question. The SD GOP is good at controlling the message in the media, mostly by not saying anything. Why not? It worked for Rounds in the primary race.

I also asked Myers about his Lt. Governor search. He said he is still working on it and is open to suggestions. He is not opposed to tapping a Democrat or Republican (He asked Lowe if he was interested) but will probably go with another Independent. He has until August 12 to submit his running mate.

My first employer in Sioux Falls closes its doors

My first job when I moved to Sioux Falls was a cook at KFC on 21st and Minnesota. Over the years I have still stopped by for my chicken and macaroni salad fix. Many of the people I met at the place while working there I still know. My manager at the time owns a successful Subway franchise in the area, one of my co-workers owns a successful bridal/wedding store in Sioux Falls. Several of my other co-workers have managed and worked at other well known bars/restaurants around town.

My roommate at the time used to love that I worked there, because I would bring home leftovers (yes, employees were allowed to take leftovers for FREE). He would get mad if I didn’t bring corn on the cob home. I still can’t believe I worked for around $4 an hour. One of the more memorable shifts was when a co-worked decided to drop acid before his shift, and I couldn’t get him to stop staring at the grease dripping down the window in the big cooker.
