Who says local government doesn’t do some things right?

solar-cell

Well, I guess, mostly me. HA! Well not today, Minnehaha County and the City of SF are considering changing the zoning usage of solar panels. The County Commission has already approved this on their end, but they have to have a joint agreement with the city. Can’t wait to see if there will be any detractors to this. I wouldn’t think so, but who knows, especially after reading about those anti-winders in the Canton and Beresford area. Renewable energy is hazardous to our health, didn’t you know?

Gordon Howie, “The Bible is God’s Love Letter to mankind.”

As the church lady would say, “Well isn’t the Special?” I usually don’t re-post Gordon’s ‘Crap’ but his latest segment had me laughing. He talks about our Founding Fathers intent with freedom and religion. Howie-doodle gets it partially correct, the founding fathers did want freedom to be religious, and wanted government out of their churches, well guess what, the founding fathers expected the same from religion, stay out of the government. It is an agreement that has worked well for over 200 years, and it is not broken. Gordon thinks we need more religion in government (he has his undies in a bunch about gay marriage).

Just look at Iraq now, what do you think they are fighting over? Religion in government. No thanks, I hope we learned something from our own civil war, they are messy.

I think things are fine just the way they are. I think Gordon just needed an excuse to bring a bible loving blonde on his program.

It ain’t over until the fat lady sings while eating her salty snacks from Walmart

As I suspected, the SD Supreme Court upheld the circuit court’s decision to allow the zoning for a 4th Walmart in Sioux Falls;
The South Dakota Supreme Court has upheld a lower court’s decision, allowing the annexation of land into the city which is now slated for a Walmart store.

The appellants are a group of residents near the site calling themselves Save Our Neighborhood. The group has argued that the land annexation was illegal because the city didn’t first get Lincoln County’s approval.

It was a long shot to begin with, but worth it. But this isn’t the end of the fight. Besides the fact that drainage is a serious issue in that neighborhood, as we saw this past week, there was another court filing by the SON group. Shortly after the election, SON filed a suit contesting the misleading ballot language. One of the main complaints was the mention of Walmart in the language. The ballot question was about re-zoning, not about Walmart specifically. The re-zone would allow any kind of large retailer to build there. In fact, as I understand it, Walmart only has a purchase agreement with the Homan family. If Walmart isn’t granted a building permit, they will have no financial obligation to purchase the land.
The city has yet to respond to the ballot language suit, or at least I have not seen anything in the media about it. Since WM won today, I wonder if they will ask the city to issue them a building permit (the only thing WM has left to do). Or will the city respond to the suit first? Of course that would require fairness and common sense from the city attorney’s office.
One can only guess what this Planning Department, Mayor and City Attorney will do, but I can guarantee whatever it is, it won’t be in the best interest of the SON neighborhood or the citizens of Sioux Falls.

Council Meeting Highlights – 6/17/14

The things you find out while watching the council meetings. During the informational yesterday, councilor Staggers asked about the rippling siding on the Events Center. After viewing the structure on Sunday, he asked what the city plans to do to fix the issue, wants to be sure the city won’t have to pay for the fix, and would like an update.

He also asked about what is being done to alleviate the situation of the exploding fire hydrant at 12th and Phillips in February. Cotter said that he would have to talk to Risk Management first (while he was saying this, the director of that department, Reagan Smith, was sitting right behind him, and could have easily gotten up and answered the question) Then Cotter said, “Not sure if a claim was filed?” Yeah, right.

At the regular council meeting, during public testimony, several items were addressed;

– I talked about the outrageous amount of money being spent on municipal elections by candidates, especially Walmart and the Mayor and how the city council needs to look at limiting campaign financing.

– Citizens for Integrity asked why we are not doing more to alleviate drainage in Sioux Falls, especially not using money for Levee Bond repayment on these projects instead of on the indoor pool.

– Greg Niezhert (sp?) talked about the issue with the new billboard regulations in Shape Places, and how the council needs to take another look at that section of the ordinance, and revise it. Good luck with that Greg. As I told him before the election, that is why Shape Places needed to be voted down, so the council could go back and totally review the entire ordinance properly. Since it passed, there is NOTHING forcing the hand of the planning office or the city council to go ‘fix’ it.

– Lastly, was another story of how the SFPD can be reckless sometimes in fighting crime. Things happen, totally understand. The problem is they are taking no responsibility for it. A landlord comes and tells her story of how a fugitive came into the laundry room of her apartment building and in order for the police to capture him, they shot smoke bombs through the windows (breaking them) destroyed the door getting in, and tore up her lawn with the SWAT vehicle. All that being said, that is not the issue, the issue is that the city refuses to cooperate with her (they are ignoring her) about paying for damages.

Surprise, Surprise. Ask Touch of Europe how that works.
