There has been plenty of talk about parking at the new EC site. Before a location was picked several parking studies showed that DTSF had more parking then the Arena location. How else can you get thousands of people DT for events like the Parade of Lights or Hot Summer Nights if parking wasn’t available?

Well that ship sailed, I guess Buffalo Wild Wings, Rollin’ Pin and Castaways are going to be able to fill the dining void before a concert 🙁

At the Mayor’s last Shut up and Listen session he said that the city has been exploring creative ideas for parking at the site, but NOT a parking ramp. He said it would be too expensive.

A South DaCola foot soldier told me last night that a football game scheduled for October 3, at Howard Wood Field (the same night of Jason Aldean) was moved.

The ONLY home game that night was WHS vs. Huron, the game will be played on the school’s field. Not sure if that was the game that was moved, but it is a little concerning that we feel like we can’t have multiple events going on in the complex area. So now we have to start shuffling around other events when a concert sells out at the new EC?

And that’s how you build a $100 million dollar Events Center.

  1. Ah the fine dining choices we have to look forward to when visiting Sioux Falls. The beautiful architecture we will be able to study as we stroll Russell Street when it is -20 degrees and the ice melt is being splashed on us. It makes such a memorable picture of why I would return to your best little city in America.

Please thank your mayor for the great planning!

  2. The detailed parking study done for the city by the architects showed much more available parking within 2000 feet of the EC Russell St site than the Cherapa site.
The difference is like 3,700 to 5,300. Only if the rail was moved would there have been potential for more spaces DT.

People in SD don’t seem to like to go to events where they have to walk more than 100 yards to the front door or field in the case of HW. I would think that is part of the reason. Both events could be there at once, but some people would have been parking over in West Sioux or east of West Ave.

Once the infrastructure is in place out there we’ll have to see what happens commercially from West Ave to The Pentagon.

  3. The point with parking for the wonderful event center is nothing should have to be rescheduled because of parking problems. There should be better scheduling.

  4. It’s won’t be long until the BIG thinkers starting talking about a cho-cho. Just take a look at Target Field and the soon to be built shrine to a NFL owners ability to rape the taxpayers in downtown MinnePaul. Got no parking, so you need to park everywhere else and clickity clak to the event.

BUT on second thought, it’s much easier to bulldoze a nearby kids playground, sell the land to a wealthy developer for a pocket change then give them a TIF to build a fee based ramp. Of course the spouses of a few special city officials will be “silent partners” in this venture.

All in the name of progress. So shut up and like it.

  5. I get really tired of seeing Lalley’s comments about bike riding in the Argus. Not everybody wants to arrive at work looking disheveled. It won’t surprise me at all if more football games have to be rescheduled from Howard Wood so people can attend events at the wonderful event center.
