South DaCola’s Political winners and losers of 2014

john_pekas

Believe it or not, like last year, my chosen two are Republicans.

John Pekas is my winner this year. John has shown he has been a great advocate for the people of Sioux Falls and Minnehaha county as commissioner, and I think he will continue to be and advocate for the people as a judge. Since the county commission has put the meetings online, I have watched Mr. Pekas over the past year perform his duties as commissioner with the highest integrity and compassion. He is also pretty darn smart. Often giving legal advice above and beyond the commissions legal counsel.

I wish him the best in his new job.

My loser this year was very easy to pick. Former governor and future senator Marion Mike Rounds. While he skirted in easily to the senate, it wasn’t because he worked at it. The ‘I hate Obama’ machine took ahold in South Dakota. Not only was Mike one of the most corrupt governors (besides Billy Bob Janks) South Dakota has ever had, his involvement in the ongoing EB-5 scandal should worry South Dakotans about the future of our Jr. Senator. Marion might have won the election, but he ain’t nothing but a big fat loser in my opinion.

I would also like to give a distant 2nd place loser to Marty Jackley for assisting the SD GOP in the EB-5 and Mette case cover-ups. Remember, when in a corner, always blame the dead guy.

Wage increase for tipped employees takes effect January 1st

handing-over-money-sized

While most would be happy with a $2 an hour raise, it really doesn’t address the bigger issue of employers paying employees fairly. While I supported a minimum wage increase for hourly folks, I didn’t like the portion of the law that doubles tipped employees wages from $2.13 to $4.25.

Why?

It doesn’t address the bigger issue of tipped employees paying non-tipped employees. What most diners don’t realize is that restaurants in South Dakota can force tipped employees to give a portion (10-25%) of their tips to non-tipped employees (bussers, cooks, dishwashers, hosts). Of course no employer really forces you to do this, but they do sucker you into signing an agreement that you will, or they won’t hire you. While a $2 an hour raise will help a lot of full-time servers (even though many restaurants already pay more then $4 an hour to tipped employees) we are still stuck paying other employees from our tips when this should be the business’ responsibility.

I would have liked to seen a provision in the law eliminating the tip share option for tipped employees, forcing employers to pay their non-tipped staff more instead putting it on the backs of their tipped employees.

While I only work about 10 hours a week serving nowadays, when I worked full-time a couple of years ago I tipped out $4,500 in one year (these are tips I EARNED given directly to me from customers I served). In that same period of time, let’s say I was making that extra $2 an hour, that only adds up to $4,160 before taxes.

Eliminating the tip share would be more beneficial to tipped employees then any silly $2 an hour raise.

Furthermore, the media will have a feeding frenzy about how tipped employees are now making double of what they did before (not really), so the unintended consequences will be people tipping less while giving restaurants an excuse to raise meal prices.

The only thing missing from this Presser is an apple tree and sombrero

There are times we send out our video machine to hopefully record something positive for our great city. This isn’t one of them. During the Mayor’s presser December 23, 2014 we learned nothing new and don’t dare ask for more than we are willing to tell you.

It reminded us of a Texas politician doing the side step. Now you see me now you don’t. We really don’t every get to see anything new but we do get an interesting demonstration of how to bust a move. When you are done, the movers feel like you need to bow your head and hide.

Instead of a run-off election, they should have had a dance-off.
