City to receive $1 Million in EC siding settlement, but won’t fix the siding

Surprise! Surprise! At 11 AM today, City Attorney Fiddle-Faddle announced a behind the door settlement with contractors over the EC siding debacle. While that is all well and good on their part to cover their tales, it does a gigantic disservice to the taxpayers by not letting us in on the terms of the settlement, which he refuses to release.

It stinks.

Mark Cotter said the siding will not be replaced and the 20 year warranty stands. He also goes on to say there is nothing structurally wrong with it. Where’s the proof Mark? Your word? Show us the consultant report. Prove it in writing and pictures! So why is the city getting this money? If there is ‘nothing’ wrong with the siding and it has a 20 year warranty, why would any contractor agree to settle? I guess the money will be put in the EC construction fund for future projects. I have a better idea, FIX THE SIDING.

We are missing a lot of information here that is just not adding up, I am still confused why this must be a closed settlement case (taxpayer money) and why anyone would pay a settlement when they are not going to fix anything with the settlement money.

In natural BS mode the Mayor claimed that he hasn’t received one single email or complaint about the aestethics of the siding, just that people said ‘let’s move on.’ He also goes on to claim we have 175K people living in Sioux Falls. I guess we gree 5000 people in just a couple of months.

Hopefully our mainstream media will dig into the settlement agreement.

The Washington Pavilion doesn’t have a plan? GET OUT!

I have to tell you, there has been some pretty ridiculous things said by directors over at the big purple building in past years, but for once, one of them finally told us the truth(?);

Michele Wellman, public relations director for the Pavilion, said the strategic makeup of the front office isn’t set nor is a timeline for determining how the organization will move forward.

“The board doesn’t have a final plan at all. At the moment, everything is up in the air,” she said, adding those interested in joining the Pavilion’s leadership team are encouraged to inquire.

Oh, they have a plan, a plan that they have relied on since day one of operation. Let the board of trustees run the joint through their ‘heavy’ in the building, the Operations Manager, Jon Loos.

Peterson and Toll are/were merely figure heads. The last time the President of the Pavilion even made an attempt at running the joint would have been Steve Hoffman, we saw how that turned out, he ran for the hills (well California). I will give Larry Toll credit for some things, he has been a heck of a fundraiser (calling his rich buddies to help out) in between afternoons sucking up cigar smoke on Phillips Avenue. But let’s not call in the big band just yet;

In 2009 when he came on, Wellman said the Pavilion was facing financial uncertainty and was struggling with a red budget.

“Larry came in at a critical time and turned the Pavilion around. He brought a brilliant business mind to manage the Pavilion,” she said. “We’ve been in the black for five years, so he dramatically turned around our financial status.”

Just when we thought we had a glimmer of hope the Pavilion would shoot it to us straight for once, they go and claim they know what ‘being in the black’ means. The Pavilion has NEVER been in the black, if you discount the subsidy they receive every year from the entertainment tax, and the fact that all the maintenance to the building is paid out of the CIP. The unfortunate part about tooting the black horn each year is that now the Events Center has started the same mantra complete with a bawling mayor press conference.

I have often said if you ever want the Washington Pavilion to have complete success and smooth sailing, you need to find a new management company and send Jon Loos and company packing. Who needs a ‘President’ when all the Pavilion really needs is a strong ‘Manager’.

Thumbs up to Sioux Falls city councilors last night

While the mayor still got his budget, there was some shining moments last night during the budget hearing by the city’s legislative branch.

Councilor Erpenbach was able to restore $10,000 to clean the mosaic wall downtown. Money that ‘should’ have been in Central Services art cleaning budget. This just shows how petty the mayor is about his vengence towards certain people. They claim the wall will have to come down if that triangle piece of property is sold. Not true, as I understand it, it is a flood control wall mandated by the Feds.

Councilors voted down Van Eps Park improvements, $85,000 (a Staggers Amendment).

Councilors Erickson and Jamison voted down the City Administration Building (still stayed in budget). This albatross could have waited until we got the county on board.

Councilor Jamison and Anderson for having the idea to present Staggers amendments in leu of his illness.

And my biggest applause goes towards Councilor Erickson for being  the ONLY councilor to vote down the property tax increase.

I see Stu did a very long story about the budget hearing (like he knows anything about city government, once again putting down Staggers and applauding our dictator mayor).
