Thought you all might like to see where the Park Board members live. Notice all are located south of 33rd street and heavily tilted to the Southeast district. No wonder they are always ready to destroy or ignore parks away from their homes.

Would it be possible to initiate an Ordinance change to change the balance of board to district based as replacements are made? Wonder what the city council thinks. (Charter Doc on Parks Board: park-board-charter )

2 Thoughts on “Should Sioux Falls Parks Board members serve in districts?

Equal representation by district makes a lot of sense. Nine districts could be created as the city continues to grow as does the need for parks and equal representation for all citizens. Currently the southeast district is represented by 7 of the 9 appointees on the board. That is not equal representation for all citizens.

After reading the park board charter I see two other possible changes. If councilors serve four year terms why should park board appointed terms be longer…5 years?

Second is the small quorum number of only 4 members required to conduct business. Considering that the park department budget is the largest of the various city department budgets, I would like to see greater required oversight than simply 4 members.

No wonder parks has their own logo. It’s resistance and potential for secession. There’s envy for the liberty enjoyed by Brandon & Tea. South of 33rd could be a new colony but south from the County Line should become a part of Canton.
