And you think you have got some steep bills, Sioux Falls city council approval of contracts

We are throwing money around like’s it’s candy on all sorts of stuff.

The city council approval of contracts (Item#1) is all about the entertainment. Almost a cool million being spent.

The EC isn’t even 2 years old and we are already buying a new boom lift for it, $89,000. (someone must have missed it on the original bid of the facility like those gaping holes in the siding.)

Then we have another $267,000 for a loading dock and $620,000 for MEP (Mechanical – Electrical -Plumbing) modications at the Pavilion. The building is only 15 years old and it is falling apart at the seems, and it is costing us millions out of the CIP each year. Can’t wait for the EC to turn sweet 15, you think the mortgage payment is expensive?!

And one little last item on the agenda is $20,000 to a private college, Augustana, to do a housing study. None of our public universities were available?

Mayor Huether’s signature is absent on this Anti-Semitism ad

In an ad by the AJC in the Wall Street Journal today, only one mayor from South Dakota had his signature appear with 318 other mayors across the country in 50 states;

Mayor Steve Allender
Rapid City, SD

Not sure how rampant anti-Semitism is in Sioux Falls or South Dakota? I’m also not sure if Mayor Huether was ever contacted by the AJC to sign the ad? But if he was, what would be the harm in signing the ad, especially a mayor of the largest community in South Dakota that has a Jewish community? Or as he calls himself, ‘The Mayor of South Dakota’

Does Pat Costello have political aspirations?

COSTELLO

After reading this story, you almost scratch your head as what those would be;

Gov. Dennis Daugaard announced Thursday that Governor’s Office of Economic Development commissioner Pat Costello will serve his last day on June 30.

It’s not like Pat will have to sharpen up his resume, he has several successful business ventures in Sioux Falls that will keep him busy, heck he employs a person who makes croutons!

There have been rumors he wants to take a stab a mayor again in 2018. Who knows? It could be governor?

But his early departure has one wondering. You don’t leave such a high profile job to go hide.

Thank You Theresa Stehly!

As you know, pressure from Stehly before she was an elected official got the ball rolling on a new boulevard ordinance;

Public Works Director Mark Cotter says while residents are encouraged to be creative, new rules will help maintain the public right-of-way from the sidewalk to the streets.

“That’s why it’s so important that we maintain this space to make sure it’s safe but also so we can frequently install, update and replace these utilities,” Cotter said.

I also like the fact that there will be a 2 year transitional period to have homeowners get used to the ordinance. I can’t wait to start my rhubard garden in the boulevard 🙂

*The press conference was held in front of former senate candidate Rick Weiland’s home on about 20th and Phillips. They have an amazing front yard.
