Knobe nails it, Local Government matters!

I often tell people that the things that go on in DC and Pierre are mostly silliness, but locally you can make a difference, I have seen it first hand;

Local Government leaders have more of an impact on our daily life than the Federal ones.

I encourage you to speak out, we have several city councilors that will listen, and act. When I see the stupid sh*t on Facebook about gun violence and the presidential election, I think about how fortunate I am to have one-on-one conversations about policy with my city councilors and county commissioners. They put on the same shoes you do everyday, engage them, you will be pleasently surprised.

Hudson writes a great article about Brian Masek & Jesse Christen

One of the best local interviews I have read in a long time. I can say I have been very fortunate to know Jesse and Brian for over 20 years, two of the top musical artists not only in Sioux Falls, but the region. Jesse is a regular at the Bolin Fest in Sioux City. I can’t even count the number of times I have seen both of them play around town and at my 15 year stint at Touch of Europe. Watching them both grow as musicians has truly been a treat. Though I could never play an instrument (just ask Jesse about the number of jokes he has cracked when I have asked him to teach me guitar) I truly appreciate music, and the raw talent these two have is remarkable. Please check them out at Jazzfest, 6 PM Thursday night on the main stage and Saturday night on the 2nd stage.

JazzFest is also a treat this year (25 years), I have been attending almost 20 years, the great mix of blues, jazz, R & B and even pop rock this year will make it one to remember, the weather is also going to be perfect. Props to Rob Joyce and SF Jazz and Blues, some of my proudest moments as a graphic designer and artist have been with the work I did with them, creating the logo for two years in the past. Come and join us and help me celebrate my big 44.

I told you so? One of the main reasons why the indoor aquatic center was built in a bad location

We said it during the campaign, the location will cause issues with expansion (of the pool) and parking. And while I was not totally opposed to a public indoor pool (I think a partnership with Sanford at the sports complex would have been best) the parking situation is going to get very, very interesting;

Construction of the Primary Care addition on the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Sioux Falls is nearly complete, and expected to be open in October. However, other phases of the project are far from finished, and it’s affecting patient care.

“My biggest limiting factor for care, is space,” said VA Health Care System Director, Darwin Goodspeed.

The VA Hospital treats more than 27,000 patients in east river every year, and the number of patients continues to rise. So, the need to expand the current building for more care comes with a price tag of $20 million.

“We’re doing some expansion, specifically to add square footage to our clinical spaces so that we can have more space available to see more veterans – more patient care.”

You also have to factor in the ‘quit claim deed’. Will the VA eventually start chipping away at the green space of Spellerberg for more parking? This location spelled trouble from the beginning, not just because of parking issues and expansion but it is built on a heavily traveled two-lane arterial (Western Avenue), that I nicknamed years ago ‘the parade route’.

Let the parking wars begin.

Repeal of Sioux Falls city admin building moves forward to 2nd reading

The lst reading passed 3-5 tonight to 2nd reading. Hopefully that momentum can keep going forward for second reading. But even if the appeal passes by the same number of votes at 2nd reading, it still doesn’t make it VETO proof by the mayor (needs to be a 2-6 vote). VETO is something mayors rarely do. I think Munson only did it once, and I can NOT recall Huether ever using his veto power, though he has chosen once to not to sign a piece of legislation (free youth bus rides). Should be interesting to see how this plays out in the end.

I personally testified tonight that a new building is NOT needed at all whether refurbished or from scratch. With advanced technology the city should be focusing on cutting it’s workforce and having highly trained workers.
