I guess my first guess was (half) right.

This is going to be an interesting ride for Mr. Huether. So when will he announce he is running for Congress or Governor as an indy.

He was inferring during the press conference that the (city council) was becoming partisan. Hardly. Ironically, I have seen the Dems on the council act like fiscal conservatives and the Republicans on the council act like social liberals. Sorry Mike, the current council is hardly partisan, but they do lean populist and libertarian.

He also hints that he is going to be a ‘leader’ in the independent movement in the state. LOL. Mike, kind of sounds like you are what you have always been, an opportunist corporatist.

He admitted that he voted for Thune and Daugaard. He was asked if he voted for Trump, and wouldn’t answer the question, but did like what Trump was doing.

Ironically, I’m sure the SDDP will be celebrating tonight. At least ONE good thing came from this election cycle.

  1. Lots of talk about D.C. politics. Running for congress. He will split the dem votes and will be beat by a Repub. By 2019 he’ll be but a foolish memory.

  2. Things worth considering:

    – Registering as an independent doesn’t obligate Huether to run as an independent.

    – Huether, as a rational person, probably recognizes that the Democratic brand in South Dakota is in shambles and distancing himself from that brand is a net positive in terms of being electable statewide.

    – Most Democratic voters are rational, and would generally prefer an independent to a Republican if those were the two viable options in a partisan race.

    – Is there any evidence that Democrats will put up anything more than token candidates in either of the major statewide races in 2018? They seem to have no viable options on the bench aside from legacy candidates like Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin and Brendan Johnson, neither of whom has shown any interest to date.

    – Is there any evidence that Democrats have anything resembling a functioning party infrastructure that would be valuable to Huether – or any candidate – in running a statewide race? There are only so many chili feeds you can do in Indian Country to buy people’s votes, after all.

Whatever MMM’s plans are, he’s making a very reasonable calculation here that being identified as a Democrat isn’t going to get him much of anything in a statewide race. So why not position himself as a fiscal conservative (necessary in South Dakota these days) and a social moderate (as an appeal to Dems and Dem leaners who are squeamish about the GOP stance on social issues)? Gosh, he just wants to do right by the hard-working families of South Dakota.

He’s probably making a bet that any GOP candidate is going to have the stench of Pierre and its attendant GOP cronyism all over them, and the Democrats will run someone totally inept.

Not saying it’s sincere, definitely not saying it’ll work. But politically, it’s effective triangulation.

  3. I am 50% closer to winning artwork! Announced he would change to be an Independent. Check! When he announces he will run for Governor I win?

The way he talked about D.C. politics he might just run for house and I’d lose. Either way he will lose running for House or Governor.

  4. I agree with LJL. I don’t think red or blue will have him. Indy will make him go away. Works for me.

Maybe tomorrow Mayor Huether will hold a press conference to announce that he’s updating his vehicle registration, too.

  6. This whole affair lacked the quiet dignity of his televised colonoscopy press conference/rectal exam.

  7. Everyone knows you can claim to be a martian on the ballot, but once your elected you must choose a side.

The first question from the press when he announces his rep election should be: After your elected, which side of the political isle will you choose to align with?

He will stammer and spin and the money will instantly dry up.

  8. i bet ms raposa is let go in the next round of argus layoffs if mmm has anything to say about it.

  9. I agree with Megan.

Why did he call a press conference for this?

As Mayor of Sioux Falls, he is serving in a non-partisan position, so who cares what his affiliation is?!

  10. ljl, he won’t split the Dem. vote. He will split the Repub. vote – because his politics have always been more aligned with the right. This may actually be a good ting for the Dems., as he frankly does not represent the views of most of us.

  11. When faced with danger to his hair he will always call for an emergency colonoscopy press conference/rectal exam to save the day

  12. A bold leader but reluctant to answer a question about whom he voted for? Maybe he wrote in his own name?
