I came across this article by a fellow I don’t know when I was on KSOO’s site looking for Lalley’s new show about bicycling and other things.

I would agree with much of what he is saying;

So if the mayor is worried about $1.2 million shortage, wouldn’t it be easiest to cancel a pricey luxury item project like new playgrounds?

We live in a nice city. Our parks are great but they don’t need to be perfect. At least not right now, if this deficit is such an issue.

This project was probably planned and green lighted before the budget shortfall. But even without the revenue shortage this is still wasteful spending. If something is broke fix it, don’t replace it. I’m not even sure anything is broken.

Reminds me of the city council approving a new snowcat for Great Bear when the new one works fine (though it may need some replacement parts in the near future).

As I have often said good government, fiscally responsible government comes from COMMON SENSE. If we are having revenue issues, we don’t go out and buy things we don’t need. This of course comes from the person who puts the budget together, the mayor and his priorities. We have a NEW events center that already needs repairs and is closed for the summer, we have a NEW swimming pool that has low attendance numbers, and soon we will have a $25 million dollar administration building that we don’t need. None of these projects made any fiscal sense, they were all simply on the Mayor’s wish list. That’s it. And that is a bad way to run a city, especially it’s wallet.

  1. It’s not a shortfall, it’s a correction. The city had a growth spurt this mayor happened to be here for. He wasted our future on play places and indoor tennis for himself. It’s almost over. Now what? Exorbitant city debt blew the bond rating. Future infrastructure will be patchwork. I feel sorry for the next mayor. He’ll get undeserved blame for Huether’s irresponsible spending spree. It’s not democracy when the fascist mayor can veto a council vote and ignore a petition with 6400 signatures. Strong Mayor Charter belongs in North Korea, not here.

  2. Spin man….don’t know what bond rating you’re looking at..maybe Illinois? Sioux Falls’ bond rating is stronger than it’s ever been. Go peddle your fake news somewhere else.

  3. Tell your bond rating BS to those working two jobs. They don’t care, but more importantly, it doesn’t effect them.

  4. A little sensitive are we? Doesn’t change the fact that the groupie was wrong once again. Facts matter.

  5. “Sioux Falls’ bond rating is stronger than it’s ever been.”

OK, it’s bond rating in Sioux Falls 101 time kids. Of course the Sioux Falls bond rating is excellent. No matter what happens to the economy, the 2nd penny sales tax has to pay the bonds first. it is a slam dunk guaranteed payout to bondholders.

What this means to we simpletons who live here is how our streets don’t get repairs. You see, the 2nd penny pays for the any repairs to the pothole hotline subject. The new Empire Mall – Louise Ave projects are done with the 2nd penny, not bonds. If we keep committing the 2nd penny to playgrounds for the rich and famous of our town, the rest of of don’t get streets we can drive safely on.

We’ve been hearing rumors the abuse of our 2nd penny is now causing real hardships on some big street project plans.

There might not be enough 2nd penny funding to do the 26th St / I-229, I-29 / 41st St and the Arrowhead / Powderhouse Road rebuilds. The rumors also are circulating for the first time, Sioux Falls may have to bond for street projects.

You know what this means, Sioux Falls is close to broke.

What a farce. The words quoted are straight out of the Mayor’s office or butt, which ever is more convenient.

You can only polish the turbak so many times but its still a turbak.

  6. The last bond rating was before the 25 mil Admin Building project and recent shortfall. It was weak then but likely dismal now. Obviously, Big Al is a paid lieutenant of the dictator at city hall. There’s half a billion in debt for a city of 120k. Try borrowing with this ratio.

  8. Spin man..Yes I must be. Who else among the vast majority of objective citizens would call out any of the resident cabal here on their conspiratorial, anarchist crap. Check mate.
