Shortly after the city council meeting last night I sent the city council and the mayor an email reminding them of the language of the 1st Amendment, I highlighted this part;

‘or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances.’

Why did I send them this? Because after public input last night the mayor went on a diatribe about how he has been trying for six years to eliminate public input and has not succeeded (FF: 51:00). He said that it was not ‘productive’ and they shouldn’t have to listen to it.

What astonished me the most is that the mayor of South Dakota’s largest city has no regard for the US Constitution or the 1st Amendment. Pretty scary that a person who rules over a city of 178,000 people thinks freedom of speech at a public meeting should be squashed because ‘he doesn’t like it’.

Call a waaabulance! (but don’t call a regular one, it might not show up.)

In a little over 11 months this nightmare of closed government will hopefully be over for the citizens of Sioux Falls, and we can hopefully go back to ruling as a Democracy and bring a little sunshine back to city government.

  1. He is an elitist snob who doesn’t believe that the people with less money then he has matter.

He is truly a horrible person lacking empathy and a desire to act in the best interest of others.

I wish the things he says would get caught on video and made public.

  2. Huether’s indignant rants prove him to be a tyrant we must keep from future public office. Indeed, the new mayor and council composure should delegate funds for a full formal investigation of his irregularities and constitutional violations. I, myself, wonder how it’s possible for a mayor to become a multimillionaire on a 100k annual salary.

  3. If diamond jim is elected we will have 4 more years of exactly what we’ve had for the last 8. diamond jim will do exactly what his bff tells him to do.

  4. I am going to agree with him. I am all for the freedom of speech and petitioning, but this is just vitriol. Some of you have made this public input time worthless. Weekly Tirades about nothing. Utter blather just to hear yourselves speak. 2 of you have serious mental issues and I’m not being sarcastic.

He is a horrible mayor, and feed his self righteousness every Tuesday with your pettiness. You know damn good and well you wont stop with a new mayor, because this is about your life, not his.

  5. LJL – I believe everybody has a right to their opinion, yours, and as I’m about to give mine.

Anonymous personal attacks without specificity? The comments you see on this blog, nice or not, are clearly at the Mayor and Adminstration, public figures. “2 of you have serious mental issues”? Seriously? You need to look up “passive-aggressive” if you want to fire off shots like you made in your post, or buck up and be specific.

It’s great to offer differing opinions, but your comment is petty and hurtful. Any public servant should/would expect harsh criticism, not private folks expressing their opinion – just as you did, and I have as well.

  6. More gold for the oppo folders of opponents in future political contests.

  7. Well, LJL, I am astonished. Whether one likes the idea or not, when one decides to interject themselves into the “public arena” they have, by default, submitted themselves, their position, their endeavors to public scrutiny. And nothing in the Constitution limits it to people of a certain intellectual, cultural, or political mindset. It is the nature of the beast. I haven’t listened to the Mayor’s comment, although, I will.

But let me add my two cents: I am of the persuasion that this mayor is BENT on his superiority. Superiority of thought, action, and intellect. I originally liked him. Not so much anymore. And it seems, you too, have a bent of superiority. This may come as a shock to you but you are only as good as your words and they were not so nice.

  8. Being specific with names would be petty and hurtful, which I did not do Passive aggressive is not appropriate for civil discourse and much of what is said by these folks is not passive and certainly aggressive. That’s is why some of these “public input folks” have serious mental issues.

The fact that you believe public officials should receive “harsh” public criticism, speaks a lot about your mental status. I wonder how you would handle yourself if you were publicly given “harsh criticism” of your job preformance and/or governmental beliefs.

The fact that you have taken such personal offense to my observation, is indication that I am on target.

  9. I wasn’t critical of past mayors. Public input is a chance for politicians to weigh their presence within the populace. There’s a distinct Fascist vacuum characteristic associated with Strong Mayor Charter. When there’s a corrupt narcissist mayor, there’s tyrannical advantage citizens and democracy can’t control. Huether has revealed himself. He’s lost political party support. It’ll cost him future office (higher or lower). Likely, there’s no place for him locally and he’ll move on. In 10 months let’s elect a mayor and council majority who commit to restoring a democratic charter with checks/balances and transparency.

  10. I’m hoping Huether censures Stehly. It’ll be in local and national news for 10 months. The free publicity will get her elected mayor. He’ll do it. He’s that egotistically mentally challenged.

  11. Ironically, LJL, there are many sitting on that Dias that are mentally ill also. MMM has already admitted he is (was) seeing a therapist. Rolfing, well not sure if there is any help for him, but I hear Florida has some nice nursing homes.

If MMM doesn’t announce a higher office run by the end of July, it ain’t gonna happen.

  12. LJL – Hahaha! MY mental status? I’ll take it as a great compliment that I could so easily expose your true nature just by disagreeing with the content of your statement. Thank you.

  13. You know, we are different philosophically. I’m one who believes consensus is comprised of combined opinions. One of the reasons I visit this blog is there are intelligent people with an opinion. Guilty, I have mine but I leave it subject to critique and amendment. What’s terrible now is there’s a lunatic mayor supported by a few AI brainwashed councilors. Not to mention names but it’s those who broke ground for the 25 million city offices building the majority of the council voted against. When there’s no control, it’s not government. It’s anarchy we can correct in 10 months. Keep posting. We are the news the media kisses ass with Huether to not report.

  14. LJL, if some day we meet, I would challenge you to attend a city council meeting. You would be frustrated like us. Why do we go to the meetings? How about this: today I received a telephone call from a distraught person trying to resolve an life threatening problem. The city has laughed at the family. We all could have the same issue they are experiencing.

Many of us hear and see these things then try to discuss the issue with several council members. Do you know what we get? Not much. They don’t care. The call the information FAKE news or scare tactics or when we are persistent they will tell us they do not respond to citizen needs because they TRUST staff.

We citizens who do not live in their neighborhoods or attend their functions are worthless or less.

So care about something and have the city staff, administration and council hit you, break your teeth, shout you down or ignore you because you asked a question. See how you feel about your government then.

I challenge you to feel good about phantom ambulances and abusive city employees when you ask for help. When you get a 980 answer while you are laying in the street. Try to think about those erstwhile people and your statement “That’s is why some of these “public input folks” have serious mental issues” with the few functioning brain cells you might have left.

  15. You assume we’ve never meant or I’ve never attended. I have attended and I did speak to my issue. I treated the council with respect and I was treated in kind. I have been engaged in the public debate about our government…And I know you’ve listened to me speak. I’ve sat in private meetings with the mayor and councilors and made my concerns very clear. When you have actual facts and findings, your asked to attend meetings.

As I’ve said before, some have legitimate complaints which need to be heard. The majority of your thoughts are rambling bullshit to harangue the council and that delegitimizes the real folks who have concerns.

You know Bruce that this is your hobby. You can say your a crusader for the people but your real purpose is to find reason to be in the paper or on TV. You enjoy making people miserable. WHY… cause someone told you to clean your junk hole. You’ve been asked several times to produce evidence that you were assaulted, yet nothing.

What an ego to assume that the ambulance service is under investigation because the almighty BRUCE saved the day. Should we give you a tiny ambulance on a wood board as a medal or would you prefer tights and a cape? Your just silly.

I’m fairly certain my dad would have called you the town nut.

I feel really bad for people in this town to call the town nut to have their concerns listened to. Maybe they would feel easier talking during the public input sessions if they didn’t have to follow the rambling bullshit from the 5 fools before them. No one is listening to the town nuts. We just accept them like mosquitos and ticks as a nuisance of life.

If your reading this and think you can be helped by the caped crusader Bruce, please call a city council person instead. be respectful and thoughtful and you will be treated in kind. There are several good ones that want to help you. No need to call Rex and Michelle. They wanted to be elected for the same reasons Bruce and “what” antagonizes them.

As always, I catch the most flak when I’m directly over the correct target.

  16. Yes.. I’ve talked about DA Mayors mental issues before and I am now 100% certain he is angling for a golden parachute no show job at a large institution. It’s so killing me not to publicly say I told you so about when he decided to “independent’ himself.

You got no funding now MIKE! Dah

  17. Astonished:
Very well said. I too think very liitle of the mayor, people forget that theirs many others in that room giving up their time as well.

It’s their right to speak, but they shouldn’t be surprised when no one listens as you weekly have nothing meaningful to say and you project it with little respect to those you are speaking to.

I would also add. “Be careful sharing your thoughts publicly too much as people will quickly find out what your truly thinking”.

That adage sums up the mayor and the weekly “public Input” folks.
