Sioux Falls is lucky. Why? We have a few city council members ready to tackle issues and not just do what they are told, you know to be collegial. One of these Sioux Falls City Councilors is Pat Starr.

Pat Starr spoke to Glory House, annexation, phantom ambulances, zoning, family and other interests we’re facing. The appreciative audience of the Sioux Falls Democratic Forum on July 21, 2017 kept him around long after the microphone left.

BTW, he also said some nice things about SouthDacola and Cameraman Bruce, but we won’t take that personally.

Every Friday, at 12 noon, come to the VFW, have lunch and interact with the speakers invited by the Democratic Forum.

We had such high hopes for Pat when he got elected to the council. But he has quickly become marginalized due to his puzzling ties to Stehly. Still trying to figure that one out as is, I suspect, most of Sioux Falls. Sad.

Pat is the best informed and most thoughtful elected official, I am acquainted with. If the city council would follow his lead on most issues, our city would be better governed, in better financial shape and every resident would feel fairly served and respected, as opposed to the sense we are all road-kill under the ego driven, heavy foot of the current Administration.

Martin, I disagree. New councilors recognize how corrupt Huether and the 3 amigo councilors are. The only way to restore rule of law is to network. For now it’s Stehly but after this election we’ll get 4 new people’s patriotic (not self promotional) councilors. It’s time to clean house and investigate/expose Huether crimes. I’d like to see Starr or Anderson as mayor. Then, there could be focus on Northeast Sioux Falls restoration, redevelopment, and infrastructure.

Martin, kind of sounds like you are upset that Pat hasn’t become a rubberstamper. Trust me, I know Pat and Theresa pretty good, and Pat and Theresa are not always lock step with each other. In fact their differences on issues have made them both look at legislative issues through a different perspective. As for Theresa, I often joke with her that she is a Democrat with a Republican registration card.

I can attest first hand to the character of Councilor Pat Starr . During this last year on the council, he has shown great courage, compassion and integrity. He and I don’t always agree, but he has treated me and others with respect and kindness, even when attempts are made to”marginalize” him. He doesn’t make decisions based on trying to win a POPULARITY contest. He also has demonstrated that he won’t be intimidated into submission. He is his”Own Man.” I admire him for these qualities.

We have both been working hard to keep the City’s governmental affairs open and transparent. We both study the issues, ask the tough questions, and yes vote NO when it is in the best interest of the citizens. We both agree that the most important part of our role is to serve the wonderful people of Sioux Falls.

Our community is blessed to have Councilor Pat Starr as their representative and I am deeply grateful to call him a friend. AMEN

    And One MORE Thing:

I would hardly call Pat Starr’s successful leadership in gifting the old ice rink land to the Glory House, collaborating with Council member Christine Erickson on the successful smoking ban ordinance or his generous contribution to help the multicultural Center fundraiser “Marginalized efforts.”

I call that VIBRANT effectiveness and being a wonderful elected official. Keep up the great work Pat!!!

  7. Hahahahahaha….. Nice try Martin, nice try…. Let me guess, you are just upset that for the first time in years we actually have a potential member of the white male establishment who is willing to represent the citizens first, when it comes to city government that is. Your probably see him as a traitor to his assumed obvious group or class.

But I will agree with one part of your comment and that is that I do think that often Stehly steals the show making Pat look like an agent of her causes, but that is just because right now Stehly is a media darling. But something tells me that he will be around much longer than Stehly and he can survive this political image concern.

And I am also reminded of something Stehly complained about when she first got on the Council, where she claimed she was told by others on the Council that she must now represent the City and not the citizens. Well, let me just say that with or without Stehly, that is what Pat is doing. He is representing the citizens or his constituents first and that is why Pat is seen as a leader, and will be one for sometime to come as an elected official….

I am so appreciative of Pat Starr’s willingness and commitment to stand firmly in opposition to the city administration, when needed, and to place citizens first when he votes. The pressure from the administration and the rubber stamp leadership of Erickson and Kiley on the city council can get rather intense. It takes courage to remain the course and vote one’s conscience.

Pat’s sound analysis and no vote for the Paramedic Plus contract was a positive position and appreciated by all citizens. And furthermore, Pat’s position on city audits is the right and transparent position.

Pat votes to help and protect citizens. Pat thinks for himself. Yahhhhh Pat!

Known Pat since he was a kid in Yankton. He comes from a great, blue-collar hard-working family and we’re all proud of him down here. Every community needs more young leaders like Pat. I’m happy (but not surprised) that so many good people in Sioux Falls recognize that.
