Now that the Former Mayor is gone running half marathons (or at least running them but not finishing?) will the new mayor and city council finally approve a city flag?

While the above design seems to be the favorite, I personally think the submission process should start over. First off, it should be open to ONLY Sioux Falls residents, artists and designers. Secondly the flag selection should be made by a committee made up of local artists, designers, architects and other scholarly folks who are experts in their fields.

While the past submissions had to follow strict criteria in flag design (color, etc.) the current proposed design was picked unscientifically by an online internet vote. This is NO way to select something that will be used for generations as our city’s flag.

I’m all for a city flag, but let’s start over.

My submission below represents the bright prairie South Dakota sun (but by using a darker blue it also could represent a full moon), our spacious skies and the falls of the Big Sioux.

  1. I’ve heard there is good support on the new council for the flag from a reliable source (not Paul). I don’t think we need a new design though. The last one was made through a fair process and it’s well liked among the community already.

  2. After we get done with pressing issues like a flag for the city, then maybe we can address less important issues like crime and wages…. What do you guys think?

  3. VSG – Thank you. While I am all for a city flag, some of the people pushing for this are fanatical. It’s embarrassing.

  4. Perhaps, if we must have a city flag, that such a city flag should show some symbolism about the sport of golf too. Because I know that golfers matter more in this town then a dead construction worker… And maybe this flag could have the silhouette of a neighborhood too, but in taupe a course…

  5. This is the first time I’ve seen this flag on the top of this page. On very first siight, I thought it was a flag from New Mexico. It has a very southwest feel to it.

The second flag looks like the sun with wheat blowing in the wind.

  6. and when the city of sioux falls anthem is played, be sure you stand to honor those who went to a lot of meetings designing the city flag.

  7. I don’t like any of the designs. To modern, without historical reference. What would look good flying below the stars/stripes and state flag? Nothing I’ve seen so far.

  8. Huether is gone. It’s safe now to have public ideas. The days of malicious code enforcement, assault, and false imprisonment are over. There’s freedom that should be reflected in a design for the city flag.

  9. Scott – The pro-flag camp is planning on attending the 6/12 informational meeting at 4:00 PM. Here’s the description.

“What, it’s 2018 and the Sioux Falls Flag is still not official? Let’s change that! Join us Tuesday, June 12 at Carnegie Hall to show your support for the People’s Flag of Sioux Falls. Try to arrive 10 minutes early to find parking and get a seat and dont forget to wear your city flag swag. It should only take 30 minutes of your time but it is vaulable to have as many people in support as possible so make sure to spead the word. Hope to see you all there. “

  10. After we get this flag thing settled, it’s best we start talking about our float ideas for next fall’s Homecoming Parade, don’t you think?…. (“Gee, do you really thing that Peggy Sue and Danny will be Homecoming Royalty next year, do yeah?….I hope so…”)
