Sioux Falls City Council needs to reform Project TRIM, ASAP!

The Emerald Ash Bore will soon be chomping down on trees all over Sioux Falls, it’s inevitable. Some of those trees are in city parks and in the city owned parking strips (boulevards) throughout the city.

In the above video, City of Sioux Falls Parks Director Kearney explains that the city will ultimately have to eliminate most of those Ash trees. The city seems to be taking a proactive approach to the problem.

This would be a perfect opportunity for the city council to tackle Project TRIM reform. During the last municipal campaign, Janet Brekke recommended that Project TRIM gets tied in with other city cleanup projects like KEEP & NICE (Brekke created these programs when she was city attorney). Not only could the city take over Project TRIM and take care of the trees they own in the Boulevard they could tie it in with the elimination of Ash trees in the boulevard.

I think the Parks and Rec and the Forestry divisions of Sioux Falls should come up with a 5 year plan to not only eliminate these trees before they are attacked by the bore, but also trim the other trees in the boulevard. It will be costly up front, but once the city goes through a second 5 year cycle it will get less expensive.

I thought I would remind everyone with First Friday happening today that Downtown Sioux Falls still exists and all of your favorite bars, restaurants and shops are also still there.

I know that there was a fear for awhile that after Former Mayor Coors Light & Olives left city hall that Downtown Sioux Falls would suffer and close down. Somehow the TenHaken Administration has figured out how to keep the lights on Downtown.

I attempted to contact city hall for comment about what they are ‘doing right’ to keep Downtown going and I got this in response;

The NEW High School Mascot

As a South DaCola foot soldier pointed out to me last night, maybe we should move the new HS to the Mall? With Younkers, SEARS and Toys’ R Us closing, we would have plenty of square footage, parking, a food court and when school is done for the day, teenagers can do what they do best, SHOP! It would be an economic boon for the mall.

They could call it MALL High School and they could have a bear as there mascot, they of course would call themselves ‘The Maulers”

TenHaken’s Deputy COS is running for a Republican Committeeman

Deputy COS T.J. Nelson is running in Precinct 309 and City Councilor Greg Neitzert is running in Precinct 317 for Committee people in the Republican Party.

While the waters have already been tested by Erickson and Staggers for councilors as committee people (the ethics commission said it was OK because they are volunteer positions) that question has never been asked about appointed city employees who work for a non-partisan mayor.

While I don’t take issue with T.J. being a proud Republican party member, I wonder if he is testing the waters on this?

If I sat on the Ethics Commission I would probably OK it, but the optics of it don’t look good when your boss has promised to be a non-partisan mayor in the campaign. I’m wondering if T.J. asked an opinion of the Ethics Commission or the city attorney?

What do you think?

It seems T.J.’s name is coming up a lot as a partisan, I think this will hurt Paul in the long run.

Primary Predictions

Since I could only vote for Amendment Y, not sure if my opinion really matters since I can’t put myself into the mind of a SD Republican. With Trump having a 74% approval rating, I think Republicans statewide will lean more conservative, but since most people are conservative, not sure what that means anyway.

I voted against Amendment Y. First off, I think the whole thing should be repealed and secondly I’m not happy with the measure being on the primary ballot instead of the general. Many independents will just not choose to vote so this will be decided mostly by party members.

For Governor, I’m giving it to Noem, but not by much, this one is close and I think with Jackboots gaining a lot in these last few weeks he still has a good chance of pulling this off. While I’m not a fan of either, I think Noem would be a better governor, even though I am supporting Sutton and feel like he has a better chance of beating Noem than Jackboots.

In Congress it seems pretty clear Dusty will pull this one off, and I prefer him as a candidate. I also think the Bjorkman has a much better chance of beating Dusty than Krebs.

State Senator District 14 I’m going with Tyler Swanger. I think Soholt has had a habit of saying one thing in public and doing another when she votes. Tyler is a young enthusiastic fellar with a great passion for people.

State Rep District 13 Peterson and Rolfing will probably pull this off even though I know there is large underground support for Muricio to upset Rolfing. Let’s hope so. We need to send Rolfing to a golf course in Florida.

State Rep District 14 I’m going to give it to Holmes and Zikmund. They are both incumbents and Tornow doesn’t belong anywhere near Pierre.

State Rep District 15 (Dems) I’m going to give to Smith and Kirschman even though I have heard there is a lot of support for Duba from the wine & cheese Dems.

The big one of the primary is of course Noem vs. Jackley. While I detest both of their policies, Jackley would be a disaster as a governor. He is wrapped up in so many scandals that I think it would just continue moving forward. I’ve nicknamed him lately, Janklow Jr.
