Sioux Falls citizen and economics enthusiast Mark Weber (who I believe actually has an economics degree) has been addressing the Sioux Falls City Council for several years at public input showing the other side of the Sioux Falls economy. Since the city is usually a month or two behind on releasing the monthly financials (we haven’t had a report since November 2020) Mark draws his data from the SD Department of Revenue. Thank you for your advocacy Mark. Here are his conclusions of 2020;

14 Thoughts on “Sioux Falls economy contracted -.07% in 2020

I am shocked it is not worse. But if you look at ’18 and ’19 and their combined average, then acknowledge the -.7% for ’20, we actually lost about 6.1% growth for ’20.

Our economy in Sioux Falls would have been worse had it not been for Noem’s covid policies. Currently, one in 710 people have died in this country due to covid, while one in 492 people have died in this state due to covid, which means that 555 more people died in this state due to covid, then the national average. This means 555 people died to help save our city economy, or 122 people since Sioux Falls is 22% of the state population. Has it been worth it?

Lastly, they estimate there are 500 abortions a year in South Dakota. Well, Noem’s covid policies are greater by 55 people, in terms of deaths. Is Noem still “pro-life”?

    .0021 x 884,659 = 1857….which is more than the 1809 actual deaths.

So, about 99.8% of the people in South Dakota DIDN’T die from COVID. Your twist on the #’s makes it sound like I couldn’t throw a rock without hitting someone that died of Wuhan. I guess we could have locked down and lost 26 more per 100,000 like New York? What’s the point you are failing to make there “oh wise one”?

How long are we gonna keep this running total in the media? We need to get on with our lives. If you are at risk stay home, let the rest get out and live.

Why is it incumbent upon me to defend New York? Comparing NY to SD is like apples and oranges. There’s a thing called density and its multiplier effect that comes into play with this pandemic and its stats. South Dakota’s numbers should be much better than New York’s due to our lack of density.

In fact, due to a greater density within Sioux Falls, it’s fair to say that Sloux Falls is responsible for more than 22% of the deaths in South Dakota thanks to Noem’s approach.

Math is not hard. 330,000,000 / by 465,000 gets you 710. 890,000 / by 1809 gets you 492. Where in the hell did you get your “.0021”?

Having .2% of the population dying from a pandemic doesn’t bother you? Well, I guess you answered my first question. Are you still “pro-life”?

  4. Defend NY to SD….YOU are the one comparing SD to the average state and then using said comparison to blame Noem. BTW, I took our states population against the 1809 who have died, 99.8% are alive. I’d just rater be positive instead of focusing on the negative, like you do. So, you are OK with killing babies, but if someone in their 80’s or 90’s in a nursing home living a miserable life because they cant have visitors dies, it’s the end of the world? Great logic.

People die every day of different causes. We will have other viruses ahead, that is the way it is. If you are afraid of the virus, or have health issues, protect yourself. Remember, Fauci said we needed to flatten the curve to keep the hospitals from being over run, we did that. Follow the science VSG.

I’m surprised there’s been economic stability. With 2 major interests coming to Foundation Park, I suspect there will be a major surge in growth. Thankyou Mark. We know there’s no honesty at city hall. Your numbers are proof. Their’s are fiction and fantasy. What tells me most there will be ongoing prosperity is people coming in from the west coast. Homes go on the market and sell the next day for at or over the asking price.

Comparing SD to the average doesn’t mean I have to defend NY. You have assumed and gaslighted with your NY contention.

What you call negative, I call transparency.

You also assume I support abortion. Actually, no one does, that I have ever met. Abortion is a private matter between a woman and her doctor. With abortion a woman should have control over their own reproductive rights. But does a governor have the right to allow people to die so she can brag about her economy?

Flatten the curve? Noem never helped with that when she invites people to come to Sturgis and smiles with joy when a FOX reporter asks if people in Sturgis will be required, or encouraged, to wear masks. You are the one who needs to follow science, or discover it.

Yes, there will be future viruses and Noem’s position is: “Let them eat cake”, I mean, die….

Covering the Abortion argument in “its a private matter’ still condones Abortion. You can put lipstick on a pig but, its still a pig. Just because you PERSONALLY would not make that decision to murder a child in the womb and allow for others to make that choice is still condoning the behavior.

The Pro-Choice argument is so flawed I don’t even know where to begin. 99.9% of Abortion is preventable as they have these new devices called Condoms, birth control, the shot, etc. Other great alternatives are No having Sex or Adoption. Using Abortion as a form or Birth Control is sick, wrong, and it is murder. Its interesting in this country we value the egg of a Bald Eagle at a maximum 5 years in prison and 250k fine yet we SUBSIDIZE the murder of unborn Human Beings.

Bringing this back to the whole Covid thing, if you believe in the right to choose you should equally believe in the right to choose not to wear a mask. In the case of not wearing a mask there is a possibility someone else might get sick and a slim chance that sick person could die. 100% of the time with Abortion 100% someone dies. So if your going to be on the ProChoice be consistent in it. Isn’t the saying “My body my choice”

As a note, please don’t trot out all the old tired arguments on this as they hold no water as they just justify the position
*Its just a clump of cells- Fully grown people are just a clump of cells as well, can we abort them?
    * It cannot survive outside the womb – A fully grown baby cannot survive outside the womb without someone taking care of it. Technology has also improved this over the years as we see babies born at 4+ months surviving
    * That life will be a burden on society – So are the homeless, elderly, mentally ill, the poor, and politicians no one is advocating for their deaths

  11. VSG….again YOU are the one that brought up abortion?! Am I still pro-life? I don’t know, do you still kill babies?

So you are saying the Governor “allowed” people to die? IIRC, didnt Noem’s grandma die in a nursing home during Covid? Yeah, I’m sure she was hoping she would so the economy would be better.

  12. Very Stable Genius on February 10, 2021 at 5:55 pm said:

    Clown,

It’s my understanding that she didn’t die from covid. But no doubt, Noem made a calculative political decision with her covid positions and more people died because of it. Or, better yet, a recent NYT opinion piece said it best, when it suggested that Noem took her failures and called them freedoms.

As far as abortion on this thread. Well, I did bring it up, and I never criticized you for commenting about it, did I?
And I don’t kill babies just as I have never been to a miscarriage funeral, have you?

    Conservative,

The mask is mostly to protect others from you and not to protect yourself. So your” choice analogy” doesn’t work.

Plus, a woman’s reproductive rights are greater than any bald eagle.

I also trust woman. In fact, I trust woman so much, that I believe the only deliberative legislative body that should have any say with an abortion should be a woman and her doctor and not a bunch of middle age men in Pierre, Bismarck, or Topeka.
