You will notice that I erased the parapet from the top of the Pavilion in this photo and kept the cornice, I actually think it looks better. I sometimes wonder when Washington HS was built some greedy contractor talked the school district into the railing to begin with? Some things don’t change.

As a member of the Class of ’79, I am a stickler. I like to preserve things. I am still troubled by that new mid-century design overhang for the east entrance. It has too much of a Washington Square influence. I also think, that as many of the original parapets should be saved. Unlike what they did to the 8th Street bridge, which is more like a recreation than a preservation. But then again, we do live in a town where historic districts are allowed to have new construction to enhance the image over the actual preservation of a given neighbor history, do we not? #McKennanParkEpcotWhatsTheDifference?
( and Woodstock adds: “Ya, this is all a whole new form of revisionist history, that is better known as recreationist history”…. “Where the truth is what you want it to be, which is actually fitting for our time”…. “Plus, they do say that the winners write the history and the developers always seem to win around here, so there you go”…. )
It should be “re-creation” and “re-creationist”. Yes, they did teach about hyphens at Washington High in my day. Although, changing history has become a recreation for some around here.
I also learned about civil disobedience at WHS back in my day as well. I took a class on it there that not only taught the history of Gandhi and MLK, but also its principles and the right and wrong ways to do it.
Today, however, Governor Noem would call such teachings: “action civics”. So, let’s not let them “re-“write history, architecture, or our democracy. Otherwise, we will be nothing but an image and product not of our history, but rather the doublespeak imagery of some of our current political leaders who are always barking their self-serving products.
Looks nice. Never gonna happen because it wasn’t a city idea.
could they run some of that neon green stripe around the top like on sanfords bank that would make it classy
I think that place is an eyesore and a waste of space. We should just level it, make a much needed parking ramp, and that area doesn’t have a car wash….I believe the term is Carwash Dessert? The city should reach out to the fine folks over at Silverstar, maybe they could put one there with more blowers to get the cars even more dry?
Question mark is back! Say, I recently went to Silverstar. Believe it, or not. My wife got a gift card for Christmas. So we went to the big FEMA looking processing center on Minnesota Avenue, but their gift card taking machine (Is that what you call it?) wasn’t working, but they did try to get us to sign-up for the $34.99 a month deal, however (No thank you!). So then we snuck into Taupeville and went to the one at 85th and Minnesota near Orange Theory and chislic heaven. Let me just say the experience was refreshing. I especially enjoyed the blanket of thick foam on the windshield with the big droplets of water falling onto it, which gave it a Christmasy feeling and the disco lights were fun, too. My only criticism is that maybe they should pipe some music into the cars somehow, or have a special dedicated radio frequency where a guy could hear some great tunes has he enters the carnal opening to a time portal of wet ecstasy. Perhaps, ‘Riders on the Storm’ by the Doors would be appropriate.
( and Woodstock ponders: “‘…gift card taking machine’?”… “Who the hell are you, Strom Thurmond?”… (“‘disco lights’?”… “That sounds like a need for some Dua, if you ask me”… )… (“‘carnal opening to a time portal of wet ecstasy’?”… “Wow! Can a good car wash place really get rid of some really good acid, too?”….))
The Washington Pavilion is NOT a waste of space, and its not an eyesore. You democrats love to destroy our historic buildings, tearing down our history all over the country. Stop it.
And, Scott — Those Decorations on the roofline were added in the 1930’s based on a popular vote of the people in the school district to dress up the building. It was not just the developers, it was done by public vote within the district.
So while you don’t want to honor the popular vote when it comes to Rec MJ you do want to honor the vote from 92 years ago. Seems like Mike logic to me.
I honor ALL VOTES that clear “Referrals” and “Court Challenges”. Dont twist my words.
I only hope ‘Tear it down?’ has in that tackle box of satirical offerings a forceps and pliers to help retrieve that fine piece of trolling lure. The hook seemed well set.
what the city needs to do is make a city run car wash for the public to use for like $5 a car and then there wouldn’t be dirty cars driving around the lasst two mayors’ potemkin village. they could put it in the parking ramp downtown where the pavilion is at, and you would drive thru where the black watch was and then by the time you come out the other side of the townhouse you will be nice and clean
Is the building on the National Historic Register? If so, that dictates what alterations might or might not be made to the exterior.
Mike, what is your “Plan†for dealing with “All†the screenshots of your prior racist and transphobic rants? You know this will be brought up again and “Againâ€.
The building Is on the historic register. So yes, there rules we must follow.
ALL CITIZENS have the right to run for public office and get elected you hace the right not to vote for them. If you wish to attack people, so be it, but I put my faith in God, who provided me my life, my liberty, and natural right to be a free man. Those who dwell on negatives can expect negative. Those who insult others get called out by those who are respectful.
My mom and discuss things from time to time. Peoppe love to instigate you to react a certain way. Specially on Facebook. God knows the truth and he saw the comments by those who instigate a response. We either learn from our mistakes or wr don’t. I hacr learned to lead by example and move on from past mistakes. And i chose to no longer respond to trolls looking for arguments.
Take how I respond to many people on this blog. I have had many insulting and things said about Mr based on my opinions related to my beliefs. But I have chosen to ignore the banter, rather I now choose to stick to a more positive approach to making dialogue.
What do I say to those who desire to live in the past? If you have issues with me. I tell them, my phone number is very Public. Your very welcome to call me to hash out our differences.
I have many Afriican American Friends, and they defend me night and day. They know me ad an honest. Hard working person, who loves his country. His state. And would defend them in a heartbeat. Those who met with me in person know me ad ad caring person. Who would never harm a soul let alone attack them.
What will I say to those who bring up the past? The truth – Facebook is full of trolls, people will stop at nothing to drag you into conversations where you may make make comments you generally would never make, they do so to get a rise out of you. You either learn from l that experience and move on. Or you dobt. I think by how I have learned how to avoid such people on social media, shows my character in a nut shell.
I can’t let our past keep us down, at some point, we got to set an example of how to conversate with others socially.
I thank Scott for giving us a place to do so peacefully and respectfully. We disagree on many issues, vut you dobtbsee us attacking each other. I been demonized for many of positions on many topics. But hey, we all have variances of opinion. We need to learn how to respect each other.
If i am able to collect 200 signatures to go on the ballot, I will do my best to represent anyone who I represent. Even when we disagree. But if you choose not to vote for me, it’s OK. It’s only life.
I am running to prove I can. And cause I care to help people. My goals are not necessary to win. I care not if I lose. That’s not important. People choose to run to make their voice heard, cause then people will listen, and only then can you make a difference to many.
Some of my biggest supporters are those I have the least in common with. That tells me. That people do accept your you as a person.
We are all children of God. The book of Roman’s taught me that. And if you all can be sure. To thank God for giving you all your fortune.
So what do I tell those who dwell on the past, I will tell them what I hace told so many, stop living inbthe past leave your home, and get out and know those people you are talking to. Never be afraid to say things you regret, cause God is a forgiving God, and when you keep him close to you. People see that you are truly a good person.
I spent my entire life afraid of how people think of me. I’m not tge most gifted person. Nor am I the most good looking. I been made fun of. Attacked. And ridiculed with the best of you. I do struggle with autism at times. My mom has helped me understand how to deal with those on Facebook who will always troll, attack. And insult you, it’s hard, but you got to admit your faults before you can move on and change your life.
My greatest weakness is I take so many things to heart, with it means I sometimes take comments to personal, but deep down, I know I am a good person at heart.
So what will I say to all those who may bring up the past? Come talk to me and get to know me, and let’s together work together to make a difference in this world.
Martin Luther King once said, people will say things they dobt really mean. It does not make them a bad person, it just shows they are human. And all humans make mistakes. You must not dwell on them, learn from them. And then you become a most holy person.
I am doing what so many of you should do. Get out and Meet people. Collect signatures. Put yourself on the ballot, be that change you wish to be. Only then, will you change the world.
Thank You.

Dissertation or Filibuster?
No cites of supporting materials or research data – so it has to be filibuster.
But one bit of helpful information – Yes to “on the Historic Register”. SO, no alterations are allowed to exterior materials or appearance. In this case Scott – your argument has be elevated to the Federal level – Department of the Interior. Local folks have no control over that. None.
I would have to do some research, but I do know the parapet were not in the original building, they were added later, when it was added onto to tie the new and old construction together. There are also many other modifications done to the exterior of the building over the years. Also, the bid is being done for with or w/o the parapets so that tells me they don’t have to be added
I am passing this on to you, I have had this website in my favorites for a few years, in it, has a very good history of the four phases of development, the parapet was added after all four buildings were built as the finishing product in order to decorate the roof line, let alone bridge the four buildings together. The north wing was built between 1908-1910; followed by the South Wing, then the southwing, and finally the west wing among removing the Old Central School House of which was cleared, to be enclosed with the West Wing. The gymnasium was added shortly thereafter, while they added the parapet at the completion of building the roof which ended up enclosing the entire building, there are windows on the inside of each of the wings, not visible today, but if you were to walk into the gymnasium today, being the Stage, which is utilized as a locker room/dressing rooms, there are areas gutted today, where you can look up and see those historic windows on the inner walls. The Building was officially completed around 1932-ish upon adding the parapet.

Clean it out and rent it to a friend of a counselor for a $1 lease.
