At the Tuesday’s Informational meeting during open discussion councilor Rich Merkouris proposed a resolution to form a Homeless Task force that focuses on east 8th street downtown.

This of course is long overdue and I applaud Rich for taking the initiative to tackle this at his 3rd meeting.

One of his fellow new councilors, Sarah Cole decided to skip her 3rd and 4th meeting of the council. Of course, councilors only have to attend one meeting a month, but it doesn’t look real good skipping your 3rd and 4th meeting after just being newly elected and not even phoning it in. I do understand she is a medical doctor and emergencies do happen . . . one of the reasons I didn’t think she had the time to dedicate to the job. Nothing against her personally or her profession, I just don’t think they work well together.

*Sorry I was out this past week on a little R & R, so I am a little late on this stuff.

  1. “Say, not too germane here, but have you guys been watching the Depp/Heard trial?”…. “Frankly, it’s better than reality TV (“Wait a minute, it is reality…. and TV(?)…” ) ….” ….“Because, check-out this discourse between a Depp attorney and a Jack Lemmon/Howard Dean meets ‘Dr. Brown’ psychiatrist on the stand”….. “In fact, the only thing missing is the 1.21 gigawatts… “

  2. Jack Lemmon, Howard Dean, and Dr. Brown? That’s the most ultimate personality disorder I’ve ever heard of …… (I wonder if there’s a pill for that?) …..

  3. Part time Council members along with this cruise control Mayor. They’ll go hand in hand. Sioux Falls is in for an exciting four years.

  4. The Depp-Heard thing gets them career attention. It’s sad how good actors become ruined with their fame. Let’s see what the jury decides. My opinion is each should pay their court costs and walk away.

The Homeless Task Force will come and go. It’s a way for the council to act interested until the topic becomes tabled and lost.

Doesn’t matter if councilors show. They’re merely for show. With Strong Mayor charter, TenHaken makes decisions.

  5. “I can’t wait until Time/Life comes out with a full length VHS collection of the Depp/Heard trial for like $89.99…. I know I’m going to order one…..”

  6. People are homeless and others can’t afford their homes anymore, or a new one. Perhaps, we could save money by combining the accessible/affordable housing task force with this new homeless task force. #RunGovernmentLikeABusiness #ChannelingHuether

  7. Does the “Goldwater Rule” apply to our city Council as well? But since we are not professionals, are we bound to such ethics? We know the Council isn’t, but then, is that due to their lack of professionalism?

  8. keep track of the good doctor’s attendance record. her next opponent can use it against her.

  9. That new councilwoman was also the one who agreed with the local media, when interviewed, that she would be in a run-off because she and the media couldn’t recognize the obvious math errors in the total percentages for the candidates on election night, which were “reported” by our official vote counter. So, I guess if you can’t figure that one out for yourself, then how does missing some meetings add-up, or matter?

  10. Sarah Cole has NOT missed 4 council meetings, that is a lie. And there is NO requirement to be present at all Informational Meeting – ordinance only requires “quorum” which is a simple majority of the council.

  11. She wasn’t at the meetings either in person or telephonic so that would make her absent. The rules are separate from the facts.

  12. Mr Zitterich,
I read the post to indicate that Sarah Cole was absent for the meeting which was the 3rd meeting in her Council career; was absent as well for the meeting which was the 4th meeting in her Council career.
She was recorded ‘Absent’ for 2 of the 4 meetings in her Council career to date (2 of 5 meetings, if you include the Installation Ceremony).
And that is what the Minutes of these meetings reflect (‘Absent’ 2 of 4 meetings).
