During the working session recently, the school board was considering how they are going to do elections and board member terms moving forward. They want to switch to 4 year terms for school board members (I think they are 3 years right now) and sync them with the city elections in the Spring. They looked at this as helping voter turnout. The other big droning argument in the room was ‘saving money’. It irritates me when a group of non-elected government workers and elected officials get giddy over saving money on elections. I’m all for being prudent when it comes to elections, and I think this will be a cost saving measure to do so, but to make it your main argument OVER voter turnout makes me wonder what this is really about?

Well, it helps to drown out the school board election. City candidates will dominate, while school board races will be in the back seat, which protects incumbents and the newly chosen. It just a part of the continual “town and gown” strategy of our local school board, where they have tried many things in recents years to effect the outcome with super precincts, not promoting upcoming elections, and now this… AND, democracy can be costly, but tyranny comes at a far greater cost.
( and Woodstock adds: “Say, maybe the school board should just hold elections every time there’s a Blood Moon…. That might save them some money, huh?”…. )
No to 4-year terms. Yes, to syncing the elections with the city elections.
Seems common sense to combine elections. School elections should get more attention. Counting votes will not change or there could be increased complexity with more school voters.
This election I noticed Nevada. Registered voters get a ballot by mail. Takes longer to tally but more voter turnout. Less fraud. As an Indy, I’ve realized bias at public polling places. Not being Republican in this state is like skin color prejudice. Mail ballots worth a try?
With RV’s registered in SD getting ballots at their owners true out of state address would this become a Blue State? Also, tax haven PO Box income tax residents living out of state?
