The media was informed today that the administration will be holding a presser Tuesday morning at 9:30 AM to put a hold on the timeline for the Delbridge Museum Mounts disposal.

It seems somebody has been listening. Councilor Neitzert did an interview on Belfrage this morning, and it was NOT a glowing review of city hall.

They CAN be saved, but where will the money come from?

I think we should do something like this to make them more interesting 🙂

Maybe instead of a mural on the Bunker Ramp, they could project a giant fireplace on it at night with all the mounts reduced to just head mounts surrounding it. We need to get creative, but don’t ask any experts outside of Sioux Falls, because they make us look like a bunch of rubes, oh that’s right, because we are.

I’ve been telling people recently if there was something I could change about the demographics in this community it would be making people more culturally aware. I can almost guarantee most people don’t know or don’t care about those mounts, which is unfortunate.

Trying to come up with a reasonable solution to this problem will be difficult enough, but when you are dealing with people who don’t want to have a cultural understanding of the significance of these mounts, it makes the lift even harder.

*Rumor was the mayor tried to get the Parks Board to have a special September meeting this week (they only meet once a month) to approve the destruction and disposal of the mounts. Oh the irony, we have an E2 ordinance on the books for 5 years that isn’t enforced and when faced with making a decision they plead ignorance, but somehow they have the expertise to approve disposing of invaluable mounts when the mayor snaps his fingers.

Place hand on face, shake head from left to right.

  1. I’ll bet sneaky Paul wasn’t expecting this much pushback. This is interesting indeed!

  2. I’m thinking donate the collection to a small Central American or Caribbean country. One that can’t afford a zoo whose people could appreciate viewing and studying animals from outside their region.

  3. Is this a developing story, or a mounting one? Perhaps, the Canadian Mounted Police could help. Mountgate, which is not to be confused with Mountbatten. Although, both eventually blew-up. Perhaps, our mayor has had dreams of being chased by a big cat while in an Impala suit. I believe Lululemon makes them for men. I like the way the Parks Department didn’t capitulate on this one, however. Else, it would have been like Nixon’s Saturday Night Massacre. Although, with the latter incident the only animals involved were the cat burglars from Watergate. This time we are talking about all kinds of animals and some stuffed ones, too. AND, did you know that “stuffed” has an additional meaning in the U.K.?….. Talk about being mounted….. Where’s the CMP when you need them?….. And also, who’s mimicking who when it comes to a mannequin challenge involving the police and or some animals?

  4. One the one hand, you are right that most people don’t know or care about this issue. But on the other hand, there are way too many people acting like this is the biggest controversy of the last 25 years. Or, conversely, doing the “instead of worrying about the stuffed animals we should be more concerned with (insert political issue)” nonsense. I didn’t know it was impossible to have opinions on multiple topics.

  5. Scott, this to me feels the same as a few years ago when the mayor pulled from the budget the Sioux Falls Community Orchestra that had been part of our culture, and city budget for, well the past 100 years. In the end, the Council came forward, presented a plan, while finding the compromise with the Mayor to maintain the band through private donations, and reorganization. I have the feeling, the administration brings these issues forward as they do, to draw up haste within the community, the people get riled up, and that leads to solutions being created.

On another hand, these Parks’ Board and Zoo Board kind of also remind me of the corrupted organizations such as the County Commission and Fair Board of taking a long time community asset – the W.H Lyons Racetrack, and because of 1 Board Member, some p…ssed off woman felt we needed a hard surfaced parking lot rather than fixing up the race track. We lost our nice racetrack cause of personal feelings of our non-paid community board members….

  6. Since most Sioux Fallsians have been to the Delbridge Collection and most of us probably inhaled air which was tainted by the removal and transportation of asbestos tainted debris by Hultgren Construction to our local landfill, does that then mean that most of us would now qualify, due to chronic arsenic and asbestos illnesses, for a medical marijuana card?

  7. “Maybe the Governor could intercede, or will the animals just have to die once again?”
