Bringing Metro 911 under city management is a good idea and will help with improving the lives of their employees. But there seems to be some little white lies strewn throughout the presser;
As the Sioux Falls City Council is currently in the process of establishing the city’s 2024 budget, cost is an important factor. TenHaken, however, claims the merger will have almost no financial impact.
“The cost is budget-neutral, we’re just shifting this over. Currently, the city and county both pay into Metro — along with the 911 surcharges and other revenues,” TenHaken explained. “Basically those just move under the city’s budget.”
It’s NOT that simple kids. If you are proposing providing better wages and benefits to the employees and more internal services provided to them, as well as new staff, it is going to cost more, a lot more. So while it is true the funding entities will remain in place it will cost more. You can’t just improve an entire department and think it will cost nothing. Councilors have told me they just recently heard about this and are disappointed they were not brought in at the beginning of this process for input, or better yet, input from the public.
As I have said, when government keeps things from you, they are up to no good. They know this will cost more, and they didn’t want to tell the council, and ultimately the public, because they are trying to avoid having that conversation, because unless they planted money trees at the new Metro offices, this is going to cost us more.
911 is principally funded federally and some from cell phone appropriation. The mayor is looking for more TIF. Public safety is more important than private indoor tennis. It’s sad sacrificing citizen safety to pad the pockets of commercial developers. This, especially, is when the council should come together and protect the people.
Sioux Falls should be its own county. The rural areas of Minnehaha should be partitioned off to the surrounding counties, while Lincoln can become rural again; and then also, Taupeville wouldn’t have to run off to Canton for plates or to register to vote. #OneSiouxFalls
9/11, I mean 911’s move, ice storms, three tornadoes in one night, the riots, the protests, downpours else droughts, the oracle of Badlands Pawn, first zombies and now dead animals on the move, bad siding, a housing crisis but a 20 million dollar bridge, some want a new diamond while others build an emerging one, the trains are still here but the high speed ones not, the Cathedral District has not only rosaries but also rotaries now, too, we are led by selfies no matter how selfish that might sound, no more Jazz Fest, no more German Fest, the building collapse and the Bunker Ramp emergence, corn holes for fun and a mural to enjoy, and the bike trail has become an Autobahn, or would that be a Cyclebahn?…..: It’s no longer ‘One Sioux Falls’, but rather ‘What a Sioux Falls’….. Best call 911 before it’s too late….. But will I still first need to dial the ‘One’?…..

Sure enough, on Labor Day, Chicky’s had an online ad that read ‘Free Chicken Sandwich for military and veterans on Labor Day’.

Speaking of Halloween, I hope they don’t mess with the Zombie Walk.
