While reading the minutes from Wednesday’s Active Transportation Board meeting they mentioned this;

Lacock stated that no meeting had been held in October.  Lacock indicated that the Bicycle Committee would be tasked with reviewing a Bike Audit program from AARP in November for potential implementation in the Spring.

AARP just released this handy tool kit on October 11 and several communities across the country are participating.

I encourage you to read the document. The one glaring thing you will notice is we are NOT doing a lot of the things recommended in this document.

One thing that jumped out were buffered or protected bicycle lanes in which there is essentially a median between the bike lane and the car lane. This would be nice considering I get buzzed all the time by people riding in the street.

Another was bike parking;

Short-term bike parking is important for shoppers, diners and visitors. A shopper popping into a store for a few items or a client visiting an office will most likely look for the closest and most convenient parking outside of the business. Because of that, the visibility and proximity to the building entrance should be prioritized.

We lack this so badly in Sioux Falls. But no worries, I tell people we have tons of bike racks in this town, they are just mysteriously disguised as ADA parking signs 🙂

  1. A special tax on pedaled modes of transportation sounds like a great idea to fund such things.

  2. Just watched a video of police driving their squad cars ON a bike path to ticket electric bike riders. Ridiculous. Ebike riders are not causing anyone trouble.

  3. Virginia, the SFPD can’t even enforce a simple speed limit on bikes on the trail, would love to see them chase down pedal tax obsconders

  4. The main reason I commute is because it is fun and easy exercise, while I do save money on gas, etc (probably spent about $300 this year in gas). And it is a great way to fight carbon emissions. Bicyclists don’t have some grand conspiracy to take over the roads we just want to be treated equally.

  5. I’m all for making this city more bike friendly….. AND, that’s where the ebikes belong, on the streets!… Hahahahah …… Peace bro! 😉

    But on another note, I’ve been using the bike trail since 1978. Initially, it started near 57th and Western and took you downtown; and over those years, I’ve seen everything on the trail from teenagers driving on it with a Plymouth Duster, a bear logged chained to a tree there while Billions (Dave & Henry where in attendance (August, 1990) filmed a car commercial about “Bare Prices”, and twice, about 15 years ago, I saw a guy walking it while he wore a Sasquatch outfit. Well, I’m assuming it was just an outfit, or how about the Time Traveler” I saw a few years ago, who was jamming to a walkman from the 80s while dressed in athletic apparel from the 1970s with tall white socks with stripes in hand or on his feet, and I probably have seen some prom dates walk it, too, in their true “Royal” attire, but I’ve never seen a member of the Royal family on it, however, but check out what happened to some Scottish dudes and a fair lady who were mountain biking in Scotland and just see who they ran into…. Check this out!…:

    ( and Woodstock adds: “Wow, imagine meeting a King on the bike trail, that’s so cool”…. ( …. “Come to think of it, I wonder if Dua ever frequents a bike trail?”… ))
