At today’s budget hearing the Finance Director decided it was a good time to campaign against IM 28 (food tax). You can’t campaign from the podium, especially as an APPOINTED official.

Soehl informed him that this is not allowable and he should not continue the presentation this way. Then Soehl says, “I would have to give equal time to the proponents of IM 28.”

The response was he was going to do it anyway and he continued. He made some remark about how he isn’t telling people how to vote as he is trashing the initiative on the taxpayers dime as an appointed public official.

Funny how Paul throws candidates out on their butt when they campaign from the podium but obviously instructed his director to do his best hit job.

Such hypocrites.

Also, Joe Kirby did a great article on ALL the initiatives and measures, worth the read! He is a really good writer. Maybe I should only post once a month 🙂

  1. Interesting, I missed this part as I watched the discussion. I must have tuned in just after that occurred. Later on, I came to the podium during public comments at the 6 pm meeting and practically did the same thing in addressing reasons to Vote No on I.M 28, but in turn, I presented it in such regards, I urged the City Council to cut the 2nd Penny Sales Tax from 1.00% down to 0.90%. I highlighted the fact that we did the exact same thing from 2006 to 2010 as we only charged 1.92%, and I also highlighted the fact, that along side the population growth of 3% a year, and the Second Penny revenue growth of almost 8% a year, we could afford to provide the tax payers a large tax cut, meaning, as the Mayor leaves office, like Trump, he would be best known for giving us the largest tax cut in history of Sioux Falls. Could my comments had been attacked the same way, as I did in fact lobby against voting in favor of I.M 28, but in turn, urged the City Council to support the Mayor’s effort to Vote No on the Initiative, instead, asking the City Council to review, assess, and audit the thought of simply lowering our Second Penny Sales Tax. My comments could have been taken in much the same manner as the Finance Director, a campaign against the initiative. But until now, I do not recall no person stand up in support of the initiative, I have stood up twice in the past month urging the City Council to lobby against I.M 28

  2. It’s city hall, throw the constitution and Roberts Rules out the window. Notice that the mayor dictator didn’t speak up. Grounds for firing the finance director? Feed the people, not more bath houses and convention centers.
