In Politics: Democratic National Convention ended last night and by all accounts it was a home run, including the acceptance speech of the Democratic Presidential Nominee, Vice-President Kamala Harris. Vice-President Harris. The Convention as a whole painted the picture of a Democratic Party firmly grounded in the mainstream of American life, supporting the rule of law and working for the betterment of every American in contrast to a Republican Party representing the selfish interests of billionaires, their nominee, 34 time convicted felon, Donald Trump, and members of Country Clubs everywhere. As Michelle Obama said on Tuesday night, it is time to “do something”.
In Politics: In South Dakota: I still wait for signs of a campaign, any campaign by South Dakota Democratic candidates and the South Dakota Democratic Party (SDDP). SDDP leadership was at the Democratic Convention in Chicago and the delegation members had their picture taken here and there.
Hopefully, besides pictures, they will bring back a plan to change the SDDP’s fortunes. Lord knows, as the Chart below demonstrates, the SDDP has been going in the wrong direction for a long time.
And, as if the Chart doesn’t say enough about the current state of the SDDP and its leadership, after candidate resignations, they are contesting only 48 of South Dakota’s legislative seats, the same number as in 2022, a number a few months ago Shane Merrel, SDDP Chair, bragged about increasing to 52 this year as a sign of the SDDP’s progress.
It is time for them to stop talking about what they are going to do and “do something”.
I suggest we start digging trenches now to save our democracy and not wait until after the election.
“Who do you think would be a better running mate for Taylor Swift in ’28, Barkley or Beyonce?”
Does Barkley like country? That’s the key. Does anyone remember what song he sang for karaoke when he partied at the once Sioux Falls Champps?
Democrats don’t want Trump to win, but if Democrats are now wearing camouflage hats and listening to country, then Trump has already won. Apparently, the “basket of deplorables” has come into vogue. Now, if only Vogue would publish a cover of Beyonce in camouflage, perhaps, that would help, too.
Somehow, Democrats have made white men a minority that needs to be listened to. Perhaps, there is a genius to this, however. Democrats are not really into identity politics, but rather individual politics, but then when are they going to recognize Tuesday bridge players or Taco Tuesday fans?
Swift-Beyonce: Now, that would be a concert, I mean convention.
The Democrats should definitely plan to have a “Karaoke Night” at their convention in ’28. I would give anything to watch Bernie and Hillary sign, “I Got You Babe”…..:

I blame the entire evolution of our political conventions on Clint Eastwood and when he spoke to a chair at the 2012 RNC, that’s when it all started:

Not only that, but roll call votes have become nothing but ceremonial like our democracy.
Republicans started the choreographical convention in ’72, but some fifty years later both major parties have become an act, or would that be just a gig, Beyonce or not?
It’s only a matter of time before the RNC will resemble a Sturgis Bike Rally with really big pasties, while the DNC will be like Burning Man with a country touch.
I miss the good old days when you didn’t know who the VP would be (And you hadn’t even heard of them before.) until Wednesday at noon of the week of a convention. AND, a pick that was only a potential heartbeat away from the presidency during a Cold War where we were only potentially 25 minutes away from a full obliterating nuclear exchange with the Soviets…. but we like it that way:

Sadly, conventions have become nothing but reality TV, while I miss when they were real:

But, “Nothing lasts forever” as that once country ballad spoke. 🙂
When did Eastwood become Jimmy Stewart? And I know that Obama has big ears, but is he really ‘Harvey’?
